Evening All;
This is my first posting to the list and hopefully I'm on the right one.
I'm trying to find out how my grandfather, John Winter HINDE, arrived in
Key West, Florida in 1880.
This is what I've found so far:
Born: 20 March 1862; Fortuneswell, Isle of Portland, County of Dorset,
England
Indentured at the age of 13 to John Way, owner of the "Huron" for a
period of 4 years. On my last trip to England searching the "Register of
Apprentices" and the "Agreement and Account of Crew" records the
following was found:
Deserted 15.1.79, Penarth
Per Eng. ? . Cardiff 28.1.79
Huron 61959 6 3/80
This is where I lose him again. A cousin in Australia, reminded me that
John had relatives in Penarth/Cardiff area working with the Morel
Brothers and recommended reading the book "Morels of Cardiff" by John
Morel Gibbs. In the book he mentions that Portland names like Hinde,
Scriven, Pearce and Angel were familiar in the area. The Scriven,
Pearce, Gibbs and Angel names are all in my family tree.
I'm thinking that family helped grandfather board another ship heading
west to the America's. I also read in the book that the Morel's had
ships going to South America and maybe one stopped in Key West.
Grandfather jumped ship here again, this is confirmed from two different
sources.
My cousin suggested on my next visit I try the Registrar General of
Shipping and Seamen situated in Llandaff to see if I could find
anything. My question is are these records available online or on a CD?
Any help, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Richard Hinde
