Betty, may I copy your information for the North Carolina New River
List? It looks like it could be helpful for some of our brick walls.

Hello,
I was wondering if the UK's "child migrant scheme" is mentioned on this
List very often. One set of my great-grandparents were born in Liverpool, Lancashire,
England ~1860, and ended up at the Liverpool Sheltering Homes when it opened in 1873.
In ~1874 the LEWIS and CORKILL children were "shipped to Canada." While
researching them, I found out about the "British Home Children." That is the
name given to the "over 100,000" needy children who were shipped to Canada from
1860 to 1940's. There is a BHC List which has existed for 10 years, and there is a
great deal of information in the archives of that List.
Last fall I started up a new List for discussing "all" of the needy children
which were sent out of the UK. If you consider all the children "shipped
out" (or "flown out") from possibly 1830 to 1970, it adds up to possibly
"over 150,000" needy children who went to live in other countries or British
Colonies. They went to Canada (and USA), Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South Africa,
Malta, etc.

My "home child," Stanley LEWIS, was born in Lancashire, England, but his
grandfather, Richard LEWIS, was born in Shropshire, England ~1803. I have possible
parents for him, but do not know anything about them. So, there is the possibility they
came from Wales.
In Canada, specifically, Truro, Nova Scotia, he reunited with his
girlfriend, Mary CORKILL, and they married there in 1879. In 1881 they
migrated to Massachusetts (US), and raised 13 children here. Mary's
father, Evan CORKILL, was born on the Isle of Man in 1827. He, as a
widower (and mariner), was still alive when 6 of his children were being
"shipped to Canada" between 1873 and 1875. I have no way of finding out
whether they remained in contact.
Thank you for your time.
