"William Norris, a well known citizen of West Pittston, was instantly killed
yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. He was employed in the Clear Spring mine and had
prepared a charge of powder to blast some coal, igniting the squib. In some unexplainable
manner the whole charge went off before the unfortunate man could reach a safe distance.
The side of his face was crushed by the flying coal.
"The deceased was an active member of the Luzerne Avenue Baptist Church. He was born
in Cardiff, South Wales, 38 years ago, and came to this country in 1865. He was a member
of the Knights of the Golden Eagle, the Sons of St. George and the Clear Spring Keg Fund.
He is survived by his wife, five children, and a brother, Charles of West Pittston. The
funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon and the cortège will leave the house at 2:30.
There will be services in the Luzerne Avenue Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Interment will be
in Pittston Cemetery."
