Hello
I'm new to this list as I'm researching my husbands side of the family
and find that his Gt Grandfather SAMUEL CARTWRIGHT married NELLY ASHTON
in December 1885 at the register office in Cardiff.
Her family ran the local fishmongers 'Ashtons' which was apparantly
established in approx 1800, moving to the market hall in 1890, and only
passing out of the hands of the family in 1973 , though the name has
been retained....
in the 1881 census, Nelly is still at home age 14 in brook St Cardiff,
with her parents Roger age 44 born in Llanidloes, and Elizabeth age 39
born in Abergavenny.
I can't find the marriage of Roger (richard on Nelly's marriage cert)
and Elizabeth nee Powell, and have no idea who their families were.
I would appreciate some advice on general information like how much of
Cardiff's records are online, which census' are available etc and any
specific knowledge about the Ashtons...
I would also like to see the family in 1871 if that's possible as on
Nelly's birth cert, in 1866, Rogers occupation was Boiler maker, so
would like to establish when he went into the business.
Nelly had an older brother David M Ashton as well as at least 6 other
siblings,-Alice, William, Henry, Jenny, Elizabeth and Archibald....
Best wishes
Sally Cartwright
