Mrs. Rachael Lewis, a well known and respected resident of the Heights, on
Tuesday fell dead in the garden plot in the rear of the residence of Edward
R. Davis, 901 Lehigh Street, near the convent. She had always been in the
best of health and her sudden death is a heavy blow to her numerous relative
and friends. She was 71 years old and was a member of the Welsh
Presbyterian Church from infancy. The following members of her family mourn
her demise: Mrs. Edward R. Davis of Lehigh Street; Thomas M. Lewis of
Silver Brook, Schuylkill County; William M. Lewis, superintendent of mines,
Thurbur, Erath County, Tex.; and James W. Lewis of this city, who resides
with his mother. Her husband, James W. Lewis, died in this city in April,
1882, and her son, Rees F. Lewis, died in this city in February 1883. She
was a native of Rhandirmwyn, Wales, but for several years resided in the
Rhondda Valley.
The funeral will take place to-day at 2 p.m. The remains will be taken to
the Welsh Presbyterian Church, where the funeral obsequies will be conducted
by Rev. Hugh Davis. Interment will be in the City Cemetery.
