From Wilkes Barre Record, Wednesday, 2 Jul 1890, Page 6.
Yesterday morning Mine Inspector David Jonathan, whose serious sickness was
mentioned in the last issue of the RECORD, died at his home in Hazleton.
Seven weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis but his condition was not
such as would excite serious apprehension. In fact he began to improve and
his family and friends were expecting that soon he would be able to resume
his business when he suffered a relapse, which made his condition even more
serious than it was before. The paralysis had extended over his entire side
and later affected his respiratory organs. He lost consciousness and on
Monday could neither speak nor recognize his friends.
Those who saw him as he lay on his sickbed knew that his life hung by a
thread and the end was near. It came expected early in the morning, the
more immediate cause being hemorrhage of the brain. Mr. Jonathan was in the
prime of life, 49 yeas of age. He leaves a wife and nine children, a
brother, William Jonathan, in Nanticoke, and two brothers in Wales. Mrs.
J.W. Custer, of this city, is the eldest daughter. He was a native of Bryn
Mawr, Wales, and came to Wilkes-Barre in 1865. He was mine foreman for the
Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. at Sugar Notch, for several years at the
Black Diamond, in this city, and later at Nanticoke. About a year ago he
passed the examination successfully and was appointed mine inspector for the
fourth, or Hazleton District, while living at Nanticoke, which office he has
filled acceptably and to his entire credit. His familiarity with the mines
in this region and thorough knowledge of the laws governing them fitted him
well for its responsibilities. In private life Mr. Jonathan was an
exemplary man. He loved music above all things else and spent many an hour
in cultivating the art. He was a famous choir leader and conducted of
musical organizations. Many sought his friendship for the pleasant moments
they might spend in his company and his circle of friends became wide and
firm. He carried $4,000 life insurance. Burial will be in Hollenback
Cemetery, this city. The funeral will leave Hazleton at 12 oclock noon
to-morrow.
