Hi Betty,
I am also a Lewis descendant however mine were originally from Breconshire
in Mid Wales. I can confirm that the surname was very common and in 1881
there were 37,047 of that name living in Wales and in Shropshire there were
2,143 out of a population of 252,462. I note that in 1881 there were 17
people living in Cheshire with the surname Throughton and they all lived in
the northern part of the county which surprised me as north Shropshire
shares a border with south Cheshire and I was looking for a clue as to where
William and Elizabeth may have met and married. Liverpool is quite close to
north Cheshire and if that was where Elizabeth lived then they may have
moved as there would be more work.
It may be worth your while subscribing to lists more specific to the areas

Subject: [WALES-GEN] LEWIS in Wales and England
Hi Kathy,
I'd just like to make a comment that I'm glad to see a LEWIS query.
I've been researching my LEWIS great-grandparents for about 5 years, and
I've been tracing them back to a William LEWIS b~1800 in Shropshire,
England. And, I've heard there were LEWIS families in Shropshire in the
1700's. I don't know who William's parents are or where they came
from.
I've been told that LEWIS is a very common name in Wales and England, but
I
very rarely see a query about the name.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S. William married Elizabeth TROUGHTON from Cheshire, England, and
they lived in Liverpool where their 4 sons were born. I am descended
from
John. John married Isabella BURROWS and they had one son,
"Stanley."
As
an orphan, Stanley went to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes and was
"shipped
to Canada." He was a "British Home Child" living in Nova Scotia.
(Stanley married Mary CORKILL, another BHC, and they migrated to
Massachusetts where they had 13 children.)
