From
www.freebmd.org.uk/ it appears that there were four people called
Job
Lewis born between 1840 and 1844, three of them in Wales. There may be a few
others if the index page was unreadable and it might be necessary to search
for John LEWIS and when you find the page for each quarter go back to see if
any Job LEWIS was registered in that quarter but not recognised.
In December quarter 1841 a Job Lewis birth was registered in Llanfyllin
district. He may be the 9-year-old servant on a farm in Brithdir,
Denbighshire in 1851 census born in Llanrhaiadr in the same county. See
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/index.html for details of registration
districts and the parishes they covered.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/
is part of the GENUKI site covering Wales as a whole and you can link from
it to each county and place within the counties. Googling 'GENUKI Wales
Denbighshire' will take you to the county page and thence to the page
covering where this Job lived,
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/DEN/LlanrhaeadrMochnant/index.html
In September quarter of 1843 a Job Lewis birth was registered in Merthyr
Tydfil district. I suspect that this one was recorded as age 19 in 1861
census in Coal Brook Vale, Aberystruth civil parish, Monmouthshire, a
collier lodging with a LEWIS family that might have been headed by a
relative of some sort, John LEWIS age 30. In 1851 he was in Penydarren,
Merthyr Tydfil as stepson of John DICHARD, Iron ore miner and his wife
Elizabeth, 48 b Pembrokeshire,Haverfordwest and also with John LEWIS 20,
stepson and Mary Lewis 10, stepdaughter - possibly the John LEWIS he is with
in 1861.
If your Job LEWIS was a miner and moved to Pennsylvania or Ohio, this may
well be your man.
In December quarter of 1844 a Job Lewis birth was registered in Ffestiniog
District in North Wales. In 1851 he was at no. 2 Tyddyngwyn,
Festiniog,Merioneth aged 7 with parents Evan,29 a quarryman and Eleanor 28,
brothers Evan 8 and Salmon 9 months, and sister Gwen 3
This was a slate quarrying area, and in 1861 Job, now aged 16 was a farm
servant with a Jones family at Tyn y ffridd,Ffestiniog, only two doors away
from his parents, now living at Cefn,Ffestiniog
This last Job is also in 1871 and 1881 censuses in Festiniog with a wife
called Cathrine or Kate, so he doesn't seem to have gone to America.
In 1881 and 1901 there is a Job LEWIS claiming to have been born in Brynmawr
or Nantyglo, Monmouthshire, close to where Job number 2 was in 1861. His
wife was Elizabeth.
There was a death of a Job LEWIS aged 44 in St Asaph district, Denbighshire
in September quarter of 1887, who might have been Job number 1 .
Hope this helps a little. If the evidence of age is uncertain you might want
to spread the search.
Jeff

Subject: [WALES-GEN] Job Lewis
I am looking for information on Job Lewis, born in 1842 in Wales. I
am
trying to find the names of his parents. I am also trying to locate where
he lived in Wales. He came to the United States about 1863. Any info
would be appreciated. Thank you.
