"Isaac Thomas of the Empire, who was injured in the Empire colliery on
Friday, as noted in the Record [do not have article], died on Saturday
morning. He was well known and generally respected and his death is a
blow to the entire community. Deceased was born in Merthyr Tydvil,
Wales, on Feb. 9, 1838, and was a little over 57 years of age. He
immigrated with his parents to America two years after his birth and
lived at Carbondale. He commenced working in the mines when 7 years of
age. At that time when purchases were to be made the residents of
Carbondale had to ride to Wilkes-Barre on horseback. The reminiscences
related in reference to these trips by Mr. Thomas were very interesting.
He also worked in Scranton and Pittston before the '70s. From the
latter place he came to Wilkes-Barre and has resided here since, working
for the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. from 1870 up to the time of his
death. The following children survive him with his wife: John J.
Thomas, Mrs. George Walters, Mrs. J.M. Jones of Pittston, Ida M.,
Charlotte and Gertrude. Mr. Thomas was an active member of Prospect
Rock Lodge 490, Knights of Pythias, and also of the Mocanaqua Tribe,
128, Red Men. Both organizations will attend the funeral. The remains
will be taken to Pittston for interment to-day at 1 o'clock. Rev. Mr.
Lloyd will conduct the obsequies."
