Hello, I belong to about a dozen Lists, but I am new to this one. The
first List I joined was the British Home Children List ... last July. I
had always known that my great-grandparents were "orphans" and they came
from Great Britain and settled in Nova Scotia. But, that's about all I
knew -- until last summer.
I'd like to ask my question first, and then I'll explain what I have
learned:
I'm looking for any information at all about a John and Isabel LEWIS who
were living in Liverpool, England, in the 1870's, with four children.
John Lewis was an Attorney at Law.
Around 1873, the four children, John "Stanley" Lewis, Josephine Lewis,
Elizabeth Lewis, and Mary Lewis were placed in the Liverpool Sheltering
Homes. (John Lewis and Josephine Lewis could have been twins, and
Josephine could have been a Joseph Lewis.)
In 1874, these four children were shipped out of Liverpool and shipped to
Halifax, NS. In 1874, John and Josephine were listed as being 14, and
Elizabeth, 9, and Mary, 7.
From the same "home" a family of five CORKILL children were
sent to Halifax,
NS, at the same time. They were the children of ... Evan and
Elizabeth
CORKILL, living in Liverpool in the 1870's. Evan Corkill was listed as a
Master Mariner, and I have found out he was born on the Isle of Man.
In 1879, John Lewis and Mary Corkill married in Nova Scotia, but then
migrated to Boston, MA. They raised 13 children there.
With help from many people, I have found out some important information
about the Corkill children, and I believe I know Evan Corkill's father's
name from the Isle of Man.
However, I have not been able to locate any ... information on where this
"Attorney John Lewis" originated. And, I have not been able to find
out what happened to John and Isabel Lewis ... that their children had to
be placed in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes.
I have asked the Liverpool List, with very little results. Since several
people suggested that Attorney Lewis probably came from Wales, I'd like to
ask the people on this List if anyone has information on him.
Thank you very much for your time, Betty
