"Many hearts were filled with sorrow yesterday morning when it became known that Rev.
William L. Evans, pastor of the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Plymouth, had died
shortly after 7 o'clock after a brief illness of typhoid fever. Rev. Mr. Evans was
born on April 13, 1869, near Caermarthenshire, South Wales. Early in life he became a
member of the Congregational Church in his native town and became active in Christian
service. Soon after his conversion he felt called to the work of the ministry and at the
age of 19 years entered the Caermarthenshire College to fit himself for that work. After
spending some time there he came to this country, and in the year 1890 entered Yale
College, from which institution he graduated in 1893. After completing his theological
course he went to Plymouth, and after supplying the Pilgrim Congregational Church was
unanimously called to its pastorate and ordained in September, 1893. Since that time he
has labored faithfully with his people and as the years have gone by the ties of Christian
love which bound him and his people together have been so cemented that their severance
brings untold sorrow. His labors in the church were attended with signal success. During
his pastorate many have been received into the fellowship of the church, and in every
department of church work success has attended his earnest efforts.
"On June 2, 1898, Mr. Evans was married to Miss Gertrude Jones, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John E. Jones of Plymouth. After the ceremony they visited at the old home in Wales,
where his aged parents, one brother and eight sisters survived.
[One paragraph on how much he was respected and one on a special prayer offered follows.]
"The funeral will take place on Friday at 2 p.m., with services at the church;
interment in Shawnee Cemetery. No flowers."
