I am trying to help a recently discovered relation with another branch
of her tree. It may be easier if I put the facts down that she already
has:
Her grandmother was born Elizabeth Jane EVANS, 26 Jan 1895 - RD Hay
(copy of short birth cert. obtained in 1948) Elizabeth Jane BROWN (same
person) married Edgar Walter HINES 15 July 1912 in the Parish of
Llangorse.
On a copy of the marriage cert. her age is stated as 20, residence at
time of marriage Tryclay, Llangorse, father John BROWN, Occ. Brewer.
She could only have been 17, could she have given a false surname as
well as adding 3 years to her age? The groom was age 21, occ. Labourer,
residence at time of marriage Trephilip, father William HINES, Occ. Cab
Driver. The two witnesses were George SEVENOAKS & Ancel (?) BROOKE.
She married her 2nd husband in 1918 claiming to be a widow but there is
no record of Edgar's death on "1837-online" between 1913 & 1918 or on
the Commonwealth War Graves website.
On the 1901 census I have found an Eliza BROWN, age 6, born Llangorse (I
think in the RD of Brecknock), father John BROWN.
Evidently she had always assumed her surname was BROWN until 1948 when
she asked for her birth certificate and saw her name was Elizabeth Jane
EVANS. I have a copy of the certificate and it is dated 23 Sept 1948,
so she must have obtained if from the PRO.
Can anyone help unravel this mystery. Any suggestions or theories would
be greatly appreciated.
If I have spelt any of the names incorrectly please forgive me as I am
unfamiliar with Welsh names.
Here's hoping!
