First, thanks to everyone who has provided me with
additional ideas and migration information to ponder.
This internet mail list is WONDERFUL
I have some additional information to add to the mix -
John FOLEY - born in Wales in Feb 1858 according to US
census The exact (or even approximate) place in Wales
is what I have been working on and the subject of my
first post (the Promtprel, Protopreal, Prontpeal or
Prontapreal post).
Place of emmigration to America, Liverpool, is based
on the naturalization records and is only correct if
the naturalization record belongs to my John FOLEY,
which I believe it does.
Date of emmigration according to 1900 US census was
1871 and according to naturalization records, 1869.
Either way, John would have been 11-13 years, so
probably didn't leave Wales alone.
Believe he was one of 16-17 children; couple set of
twins. Possible names of two of John FOLEY's
siblings: William, Mary.
In 1900 US Census John FOLEY states that his father
was born in Ireland, but his mother was Welsh born.
I am not at all sure that my ancestor came from
Glamorgan, but someone on the Glamorgan List cited the
following statistic: Foley's in Glamorgan(200) vs the
whole of Wales (331) in 1881. And I did read recently
that many Welsh left the mines of Glamorgan for the
Scranton area of Pennsylvania - which is roughly where
my FOLEY landed.
Is there an online site where I can get info on the
200 FOLEY's in GLAM in the 1881 census, or for that
matter, the 1861 or 1871 census?
Thanks everyone and for those on this side of the
pond, Happy Turkey day!
Ruth
