Subject: Identifying a town in Wales
I have been trying since the late 1970's to identify
the town in Wales where my great grandfather, John
FOLEY was born and lived until he emmigrated (possibly
from Liverpool) in the 1860's. The town was pronounced
by his now deceased daughter as follows: Promtprel or
Protopreal or Prontpeal or Prontapreal, with the
accent on the last syllable. This individual(my great
aunt) gave me this information in 1979 when she was in
her 80's and she was only 14ish when her Dad died; so
that should be taken into consideration. John Foley
became a miner in the Plymouth area of Wilkes-Barre,
in Luzerne County Pennsylvania, where he married and
settled. Not sure whether his father was a miner in
Wales or not, but according to census record for John,
John's father was born in Ireland, not Wales, so the
family may have only been in Wales a short time. I
located two towns in Glamorgan which sound like they
could be possible matches, but I didn't want to jump
to conclusions or eliminate other possibliites - they
are: Pant-yr-awel and Pont-y-rhyl.
Any light that can be shed would be very much
appreciated.
Ruth Foley Riley
