article. I have only reproduced those items that may aid in identification.)
"The death occurred on Saturday of one of the most widely and best known of Scranton
citizens, Thomas D. Davies....The following was noted in the Scranton Republican:
"Deceased was born April 15, 1835, in Rhandirmwyn, Carmarthenshire, South Wales. In
1859, Mr. Davies emigrated to America, settling in Hyde Park, where he has ever since
resided, except for a short time, when he lived in the North End, in that part know as the
Notch, where he was mine foreman at the old Luzerne slope, at one time operated by the
D.L.&W.R.R. Co. He served in this capacity for six years. In 1867 he was given
charge of the Bellevue colliery and afterwards transferred to the Dodge mine. In 1872 Mr.
Davies was made assistant superintendent to Benjamin Hughes, which position he held until
his demise.

"He is survived by a widow and two daughters, Mary, of Lewis, Reilly & Davies;
Margaret, and a son, Ellsworth.
"The funeral is to be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery,
Scranton."
