"Morgan C. Jenkins, one of the oldest residents of Shamokin, father of Mrs. Herbert
S. Hobbs of Plymouth and John E. Jenkins of Wilkes-Barre, died on Thursday afternoon after
a lingering and painful illness of about two years. The deceased was born at Llan Wrtydd,
Breconshire, Wales, Jan. 28, 1822, and was the eleventh child in a family of ten sons and
two daughters, several of whom lived to extreme old age. The sole survivor of this large
family is Dr. E.P. Jenkins, of Coaldale, Bedford County, PA.
"During the years 1871-1881, Mr. Jenkins was engaged in iron ore mining as
superintendent of McCormick & Co., of Harrisburg, PA, and conducted mining operations
for that firm in Gerty's Notch and Dillsburg, PA, and in the states of Maryland, North
Carolina, New Jersey and Indiana.
"For forty years Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Shamokin, and
for many years taught young ladies' bible class in its Sunday school. He continued
active in the affairs of the church until failing health compelled him to retire."
