Hello,
I haven't been on this List for a while, so I thought I would rejoin and repost
my interest in learning whether my great-great-grandfather, John LEWIS,
possibly came from WALES. All I know about him so far is that he probably
married in Liverpool, England, in June 1841. His wife was probably Isabella
HUGHES. If this was their first marriage,* then they were probably born in
the 1810 to 1820 timeframe. And, there is also the possibility that she came
from WALES also.
I have found out from people on the Liverpool List that John LEWIS and Isabella
HUGHES were probably not living in Liverpool when they married at St. Peter's
Church on Church Street there in 1841. Unfortunately, I have no idea at all..
which part of the British Isles they might have been living in. However, some
on-line research showed that there were many LEWIS and HUGHES families which
were members of St. Peter's Church on Church Street during the 1800's. So,
they might have had relatives there.
I just found out this spring that the father of John LEWIS was William LEWIS.
And, the father of Isabella HUGHES was Thomas HUGHES.
In regards to the children, this is also a mystery. John and Isabella LEWIS
were married in the summer of 1841, and yet the only child I know of, for sure,
so far is their son, John Stanley LEWIS, born in December 1859. And, some on-
line searching does not show him being born in Liverpool, England. But, he ws
probably christened there (St. Peter's Church).
John Stanley LEWIS reportedly had a sister. There was a Josephine LEWIS on
the ship with him when he was sent to Canada. Josephine was also born in
1859, so she might have been a twin-sister. Both John and Josephine (and two
younger LEWIS girls) went to live in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes when it
opened in 1873. They were all shipped to Halifax, NS, in 1874. ("British
Home Children")
The mystery is that I would like to know whether John and Isabella (HUGHES)
LEWIS had other children born to them between 1842 and 1858. If they did, did
the children live? Oh, by the way, it appears that John and Isabella LEWIS
had another son in 1864; there was a William LEWIS christened at St. Peter's
Church in Liverpool, England, in 1864. I do not know what happened to him.
Thank you for your time.

*While searching the "FreeBMD" site for England this morning, I found two
records of a John LEWIS marrying in Liverpool, England, in 1837. So, I'm
curious if the 1841 marriage was a second marriage for John.
FYI: I can find no records at all for the deaths of John LEWIS and Mrs.
Isabella LEWIS in England, which tie into their possible years of birth between
1810 and 1820. Since John Stanley LEWIS (and Josephine LEWIS) went to live in
the Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1873, I would suspect that one of his parents
died in either 1872 or 1873.
Since I do not know where the parents, John and Isabella LEWIS, were living
during their married years, I do not know where they might have died.
