Dear List,
Is anybody out there researching a Lodwig family in south wales. I have
Mary, widow with Rees, John and Mary on the 1881census, also a son
William, born
1863 on 1901 census and can't find her husband David.
I have Johns marriage and birth certificate (born 1874 Pontypridd) but cant
find his parents marriage and therefore his father David as I dont
know how old
he was.
No body else seems to be researching this name? Is there anybody who can
help or shed any light on this??
Mary Lodwig
______________________________
I recall the name appearing in the Swansea area and a little
northward in Carmarthenshire and perhaps Pembrokeshire. I noticed it
particularly because the name, not Celtic, seemed out of place, and
furthermore one or two of the General Record Office index entries for
Rodrick were in reality Lodwick. It could be a single source surname
(monophyletic) in Wales and is worth studying its origin and spread
on that basis alone, of course, as well as for your genealogical
interest.
I think I have one or two UK VR certificates tucked away somewhere
for the name Lodwick.
A good start in locating its origin and spread would be to look at
the FreeBMD web site and tabulate all the registration districts that
have entries for the name. Look for the center of concentration of
the name. Confine the search initially to the period 1837-1850 to
get the "oldest" information for the name.
