Good day Listers,
I am new to this mailing list and would like to ask you for help and
assistance please.
My grandfather Frederick Ernest Smith came to South Africa as a soldier
during the Boer War.
He fell in love with my grandmother during the time of war and they got
married in 1911.
My grandfather died in WW1 in 1916, my father was ten months old. It is
said that my grandmother died with him, she never spoke about him. She use
to say that what ever we would like to know is in a safe keeping box and we
will someday have our answers. While dying in hospital in 1963 her
apartment was burgled and even "our safe keeping box" was stolen.
I have nothing to work with apart from the fact that on my grandfather's
death notice from the Defence Force it says that his parents were Alfred and
Annie Smith and that he was born in South Africa - maybe Durban or
Pietermaritzburg. My father use to tell us that my grandfather's family
were from Wales.
I have been researching the wrong family for nine years. I wrote letters to
people in Bunwell hoping to make contact with relatives - information gained
from the Boer War files - just to find that Frederick Ernest Smith from
Bunwell died in 1904.
Please if you can help me in anyway it will be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Kind regards,
Karin Serfontein nee Smith,
SOUTH AFRICA.
