From Wilkes Barre Record, Friday, 12 Dec 1890, Page 1
At 7:15 Wednesday evening David W. Davis of South Sherman St. fell dead
from a fit of apoplexy. He had been ailing for the past two months, and has
been unable to follow his employment. He had partaken of supper and nothing
unusual was noticed in his demeanor when he retired for the night. Short
after he went up stairs a heavy fall was heard, and the members of the
family found him lying on the floor. He was picked up and a medical man
sent for, who found that life was extinct. He was a typical Welshman, (and
was known as the Bardd y Red Ash.) He always took an active part in
eisteddfod matters, was a man of ready wit, and his poems were full of local
hits and were sure the create laughter. He had been for several years, and
till his health failed, employed as a stable boss at the Empire colliery,
L.&W.-B. Coal Co., and latterly at the Red Ash collieries, from which place
he takes his bardic name. Hon. M.B. Williams, who was presiding at one of
the eisteddfods, being pleased at one of his poetical local hits, dubbed him
the Red Ash Bard. He has for many years been a regular attendant of the
Welsh Presbyterian Church, but for some time has attended the Puritan Church
with his wife and son. He was 58 years of age, and was a native of
Llantrissant, Wales, where prior to his emigrating to the United States, he
worked as a shoemaker. His mother was the keep of the old turnpike gate at
that ancient Welsh town. He was a cousin of the late Dewi Haran and an
intimate friend of Archdruid Morian, who recently visited the United States.
(At his home he was familiarly known at Dafydd y clwyd.) He was an active
member of the Lietty Ivor Lodge of True Ivorites. The funeral will take
place on Saturday, at 2 p.m., Rev. E.J. Morris officiating. Interment in
Hollenback Cemetery. The Ivorites Lodge will meet in their hall at 1 p.m.,
and will attend the funeral in a body. He leaves a wife and son.
