Some years ago my wife inherited the photos her father took during WWI in Egypt and
Palestine. He was a member of the Australian 4th Light Horse Regimnent and was involved in
the momentous cavalry charge at Beersheba. Most of his photos, unfortunately, are not
captioned and we have but the haziest idea of what and where - or whom.
However, there is one photo of a soldier, presumably T.J. Morgan - in a uniform which does
not appear to be Australian - and on the back the following:
"Jackman
60 Canning St
Cwm" Then an undecipherable word which *could* be something like Oscapy
Then -
"To my dear old cobber McFearson" (an obvious reference to my wife's father,
Fred McPherson)
From yours Screwly (Yes, that's what he has written!)
T.J. Morgan
67 Canning St
Cwm
Nr Newport
Mon"
Followed b y a word that could be 'Stretcher'
The photo was taken in the studio of Alice Neame, Bedford.
The soldier's uniform carries no obvious badges of rank but has a pair of crossed
flags above a roundel with the red cross symbol on the right sleeve and a lanyard worn
under the right epaulette. He is posed half facing, seated in a rustic chair, body turned
to the left, and is carrying a longish riding crop. He is a very good looking young chap
and has a full head of hair.
There is no known connection to my wife's family and we are posting this info on the
list in the hope that someone *might* recognise the name and address. We can send a
digital image to anyone interested and would be prepared to send the original to anyone
with a definite connection.
