Ellen.
My immediate reaction was that the name could have been derived from the
Irish Flaherty so I checked my copy of "The Oxford Names Companion". It
records that Flaherty is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic name
O'Flaithbheartach. Variations are O'Fla(g)herty, Flagherty, Flaverty,
Flarity. I wonder if your ancestors were originally Irish but crossed the
sea to England or Wales, hence the family folklore.
I checked for Fluharty and Fleharty in the book which is "The Definitive
Guide to the Surnames, First Names and Place Names of the British Isles" and
neither of the names appear.

Margaret Harvey

Subject: [WALES-GEN] Surname --- is origin of surname FLUHARTY / FLEHARTY
Welsh??
Family folklore says FLUHARTY is Welsh in origin, but I can not find
any
evidence.
The earliest record of FLUHARTY/FLEHARTY I have in the tree is a man
transported from England to America in the early 1600's.
Thanks.
Ellen
