Does anyone have access to ship records or Quaker records in
Wales? What ports would ships have sailed from?
Seeking information on the Quaker religion in Wales,
specifically those who migrated to the USA with William Penn in
the period of 1680's. One being EVAN OLIVER of Glascombe who
with his wife Jean and children David, Elizabeth, John, Hannah,
Mary and Evan might have sailed on the ship LAMB, SUBMISSION or
VINE.
I am searching for my ancestor SYLVESTER DEPUTY who was
possibly in this region during that time period and who also
migrated to the Colonies settling on property that was a PENN
land grant.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello from Ohio,
I am trying to find information on a Lewis LEWIS, possibly Louis LEWIS, born 1841/1842 Wales or Elizabeth/Elisabeth LEWIS born 1846/1847 to the parents of David LEWIS and Margaret/Mary (maiden name Unknown).
I have information that leads me to believe my LEWIS family may have been from the Glenmorganshire area. This is from a Naturalization Docket for a David LEWIS, which would be the right age for my David and the Year in which census documents say they arrived in US (1848). Possibly on the Ship SIDDONS from Liverpool to New York.
David b. abt. 1811/1812
Margaret/Mary b. abt. 1812/1813
Thomas b. 20 Sep 1833
William b. abt. 1838
Lewis/Louis b. abt. 1841/1842
Elizabeth/Elisabeth b. abt. 1846/1847
All of these family members were born in Wales. Does anyone have ideas where I can get further information? I appreciate anything or any help I can get.
Sincerely,
Beth Lewis

Last week I wrote, that at the end of January 2002 the Anglo-Italian list
was created as a discussion forum for those who are researching their
Anglo-Italian Ancestry. (Anglo-Italian-L-request(a)rootsweb.com)
and that through discussion on the list, it has become apparent that
there is no formal Society available to researchers, and thus
researching Anglo-Italian Ancestry can be rather isolating.
It was felt that the long term aims would be to:
1. Form a Anglo-Italian Family History Society
2. To develop a web page for links and other useful bits of information.
Both of these are to run along side the Anglo-Italian Mailing List and it is
intended that this will be open to all those researching in this area, and
it is hoped that those without Internet Access will also benefit.
Over the last few days Elaine Collins and I have discussed having
a meeting, and as a result Elaine has agreed to coordinate such
an event.
The date of the Inaugural Meeting of the Anglo-Italian Family History
Society has been arranged. For further details please see the Web Page

Please support this worthwhile project.

Good Afternoon
You may remember I was looking for the above from Abergele and her
husband Harry BANNISTER. Well I found the marriage. Well I didn't it,
someone else did with a shrewd piece of detective work. The marriage
took place at Register Office in the Parish of Runcorn in the County of
Chester in 1912 not 1911 and not in a church. [No small wonder Mavis
and Molly didn't find it.] With this and other records I now have a
spread in possible year of birth. The age on the marriage registration
may have been padded a little, 26 in 1912 as opposed to 37 in 1927 on
passenger list to Canada. As far as I know she is still from Abergele.
The only glimmer of hope I have from all this is that her father is
listed as David WILLIAMS, a new finding. I imagine David is just as
frequently an occurring name as WILLIAMS.
I know I've posted this request but perhaps there are some new list
members or someone may have a new record or two in their possession.
While some have already done some digging for me I would like to repost
a request for a look at the 1891 census in and around Abergele for a
Martha WILLIAMS, b 1886-1890, with father named David.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi
Can someone please advise the county that Newport is in? Also is there a site which has Wales towns etc located on them for reference?
Thank you

Good morning Margaret,
Thanks for your contribution. I most certainly will have a browse through
that BONDS site. I was not previously aware of its existence. At the
moment I'm overdue for breakfast...slept in after keeping early morning
hours.
Please also see my response to Ruth.
Hope your day has gone well. We finally have sunshine but it's most
unseasonably cold. Hit -4C last night despite the flowers already in
bloom. Normally we would be cutting the lawn and gardening by now.
Vancouver Island had an unseasonal dump of snow Friday night.
Keeps the family searchers indoors! :-)
Thanks for your input.

Hi,
Newport is now in Gwent but used to be in Monmouthshire. It isn't quite as
simple as that as Monmouthshire used to be an English county but considered
part of Wales for some legal purposes.
The CDRom which is part of the 1881 collection produced by the Latter-day
Saints is classified as the Wales and Monmouth area.
I don't know of a site but I am sure there must be one, it would be very
useful.
Regards,
Margaret

Hello all,
In my Lewis post, I mentioned another of my brick walls which
also seems anchored in Wales. I'm interested in hearing from
anybody with information to share regarding my GGrandfather
Thomas William Davies who claimed to have been born in Wales
probably in 1824 but perhaps as late at 1826. [Census records
vary.]
I have absolutely nothing concrete to link him to Wales save for
his marriage record, a later application for homestead land and
that his children gave their origin as Welsh albeit all were born
in Ontario. T. W. Davies married an Alice Blackburn in Wallaceburg
Ontario in September, 1852, in a dual ceremony conducted by a
Wesleyan Methodist minister. One of Alice's brothers was married
at the same time and later included `Davies' among his first son's
name. The Blackburn family had it's roots in Armagh, Ireland in
the 1700s and came to Canada as United Empire Loyalists from
Pennsylvania, USA.
I have no inkling of how or when TW arrived in Upper Canada [or
even Ontario] save that he might have come with British troops
encamped at Chatham barracks [both Chatham and Wallaceburg
are in Kent County] or he might even have arrived shortly before
his marriage. One thing is certain, he arrived to early to be among
the `home' children of the later 1800s.
I'm told that most Welsh folk who immigrated to Canada, did so
from Glamorgan, Powys and Monmouthshire, sailing from Bristol
or Liverpool. Were I a betting man, I'd lay a dollar on Bristol though
you folks might insist upon at least a pound.
Unlike my early Lewis family where most of the children were
born in Wales, all of my immediate Davies kin [found to date] were
born in Ontario with descendants now scattered the breadth of both
Canada and the United States.
I have been told that I am most unlikely to penetrate my brick
walls in Wales without some clue as to how these ancestors
got to Canada or some definitive link to Wales. I am, however, not
ready to concede defeat. Were I in good health, I'd be on a plane
for Wales without a second thought. I might not find my folks but
I'd at least know the land of my paternal ancestors. I'll not tell any
of you that my mother is of Northern Ireland descent. Shush now.
Please feel free to contact me directly or on the board if there's
even a remote hope of a connection.
Thanks to a new found Welsh contacts and cyber pals, I now
can say `diolch yn fawr ' and `lechyd da'. Hey, it's a start.
Now as you folks start your day at 9:15 GMT, I'm heading back
to bed at 1:15 a.m. PDT. Have a good one.

Hello all,
Can't fall to sleep so I thought I'd repost one of my brick walls
which seems anchored in Wales. I'm interested in hearing from
anybody with information to share regarding James and Berry
Lewis who arrived in Canada about 1840 with their family of 6
children: Lewis, John, Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Thomas, all
born in Wales. A 7th child, Ann, was born in what was to
become Ontario, about 1843. The family settled in Walpole
Township of Haldimand County, then Upper Canada.
I have no maiden name for Berry Lewis nor any clue from where
they came in Wales. Based solely upon census records, I
make James to have been born about 1794 and Berry about
1800.
I have marriages for Lewis, John and Thomas but nothing re the
girls. It is believed that the mother of some of the children was
a Margaret Walters but she either died in Wales or England
perhaps, on the voyage over or soon after arrival: I speculate
the former, and that Berry is James second wife. I have no
notion of Margaret's birth date save that it was Thomas, born
about two years before sailing in 1838, who declared Margaret
Walters as his mother when he married in 1864. Said she was
born in England [which is probably correct since he said that
his father was born in Wales].
James and Berry would be GGGrandparents of mine, son Lewis
being my GGrandfather. He married Nancy Ann Hopper, born
on Amherst Island, Ontario, and Lewis and Nancy's 2nd child,
Victoria Lewis, married my Davies Grandfather, Albert John.
The latter's father is my other brick wall, also having its foundation
in Wales. See my separate repost.
I'm told that most Welsh folk who immigrated to Canada, did so
from Glamorgan, Powys and Monmouthshire, sailing from Bristol
or Liverpool. Were I a betting man, I'd lay a dollar on Bristol though
you folks might insist upon at least a pound.
I have been told that I am most unlikely to penetrate my brick

for Wales without a second thought. I might not find my folks but
I'd at least know the land of my paternal ancestors. I'll not tell any
of you that my mother is of Northern Ireland descent. Sush now.
Please feel free to contact me directly or on the board if there's
even a remote hope of a connection.
Thanks to a new found Welsh cyber pal, I now can say,
Lechyd da

Hello everyone
The Free Census project aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th century census
returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database.
Currently we have nearly 50 projects covering a county or part of a county.
All but one are English, the only Welsh project covers Anglesey. The first
Scots project is in the pipeline.
We would dearly love to hear from anyone who would be willing to organise a
Welsh county project. All the support you need will be provided including
microfiche and software.
If like us, you believe this information should be freely available and
available for free, why not drop me a line?

"DEATH OF MRS. LEWIS S. JONES
"This estimable lady, wife of ex-councilman Lewis S. Jones of the Heights, died suddenly at her home at 4:50 yesterday afternoon of heart trouble. Mrs. Jones was a prominent lady in the Welsh Presbyterian Church, of which she has been a consistent member since 1863, when the family moved from Scranton and settled at the Empire, where her husband was superintendent for a number of years. Mrs. and Mrs. Jones came from their home thirty-six years ago, or three years after their marriage, arriving at Scranton in 1860, where they remained for three years, coming from there when they settled in this city in 1863. Mrs. Jones was the daughter of David Meredith of Montgomeryshire, North Wales. The union of these two was a very long, happy and prosperous one. Seven children survived their departed mother, viz: Jarneth Jones, superintendent of the Crystal Spring Water Co.; Mrs. Samuel Griffiths of Wanamie; Mrs. Daniel E. Thomas, grocer, of East Market street; Lizzie, Maggie, Rachel and Meredith. Truly a mother in Israel has been removed from the Church militant. Her life was a benediction and it was always a comfort and a joy to be about her. Funeral will take place on Friday at 2 p.m., when Rev. J.O. Jones, pastor of the Welsh Presbyterian Church, and Rev. J.B. Craven, pastor of the Grant Street Presbyterian Church, will officiate."
