Looking for any information anyone might have on John Edwards born July 3rd or 30th 1865 in what I believe to be Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn
However the bizarre spelling I was given by an Aunt was Llanfyhangelerewddyn so I have surmised that it should be Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn. His parents were Evan Lewis Edwards or possibly Edward Edwards and Margaret (James) Edwards.
Feel free to email me directly if you think you have some information regarding this John. I would like to find out about his family in Wales. villa(a)recorder.ca
Searching for any information on the James PARRY family.
James PARRY b. ca. 1848 Wrexham Wales
wife Sarah b. ca. 1847 Wrexham Wales
Margaret Emma daughter b. 9/7/1871 Stafford
William J son b. 11/23/1873 Stafford
Alice A daughter b. 1/29/1876 Ashton-Under-Lyne Lanc
Charles Thomas b. 11/7/1879 Ashton-Under-Lyne Lanc
Mary Eliza b. ?
Trying to find birth/marriage info for James & Sarah. They lived in Stafford
prior to 1876 according to our family Bible; and at 196 Catherine St. A-U-L
in the 1881 census.
I would like to find the parents of
Jonathan Collins DAVIS b: 28 Mar 1779 England or Wales
A bio written on him claimed he was from England and came to America as a
"boy", worked as a tailor in Wilmington, Delaware (indentured?) for several
years before coming to Carroll County, Maryland in 1810 and purchasing
property, first two lots in Uniontown (had tailor shop) and later a large
estate in Middleburg, not far from Uniontown. However, tales from his eldest
son's descendants claim they heard he was from Wales. He died 2 Jan 1842
Carroll Co, Maryland.
His wife was Maria (Mary) WINTER (German) (1792-1865) whom he married in
Carroll Co, Maryland on 17 Apr 1812. Their children were -
..... 1 John Winter DAVIS 1813-1877 Harney, MD; w/ Mary Jane COVER
(named after his maternal grandfather)
..... 2 Ann Maria DAVIS 1815-1891 Single
..... 3 Edward DAVIS 1817-1825 Died in Childhood
..... 4 Aaron DAVIS 1819-1909 - w/ Elizabeth Eve DEGRANGE
..... 5 Joseph DAVIS 1822-1872 Single
..... 6 William DAVIS 1825-1884 Single
..... 7 Jonathan Collins DAVIS, Jr. 1827-1857 Frederick, Maryland
..... 8 George H. DAVIS 1830-1868 Single
======
I have no idea where to start searching and have not found any record of him
in Wilmington, Delaware either to help in determining when he came here
exactly.
There was a Jonathan Davis listed in 1801 on the ship/snow Panther that
could be him.
I would appreciate any ideas.

Hello Anne,
I don't know if there would be any connection, as the line I'm looking for
does not go that far back, but I have a Sarah BEVAN (daughter of Thomas
BEVAN) married to a John EVANS 11 April 1873 in Sardis Chapel, Pontypridd.
Their daughter Edith EVANS married Joseph Lewis REES (residence Whitchurch,
son of William REES)13 July 1899 in Llantwit.
Am looking for marriage or parents of Thomas BEVAN. Also looking for same
information for William REES. Any help greatly appreciated.

Barbara

Herewith the joke of the day:
The Australasian Shropshire Register came in from the out of town store to
the State Library and was waiting for me at the desk, together with the
1879 directory.
The ASR looked very inviting, as it was about eight volumes from 1901-1912,
with a very fat one doubly shrink-wrapped against the atmosphere. At last
here was a register of Australian folk who had emigrated from Shropshire
and had formed an association. Much the same as the Welsh had done in some
lands. Should be some good names in there! And there were - there was a
Mrs. Blissfull Ewe living on a farm in Tasmania, and a Mr. Sturdee Ram up
in Victoria.
The ASR was not a list of humans, but a register of thoroughbred
SHEEP! Apparently the quality of the Shropshire breed was such that
thousands had been imported into Australia since 1864, and then in 1901 it
was decided to set up a register of breeders. Ha Ha! Ahh well, not so
much different from the human race! Baaahhhh.
And so to the Commercial & Trades directory for 1879:
There were some enquiries from the Welsh lists for Bristol - not that far
away these days with a motorized push bike or one of those new-fangled
motor scooters you stand upright on. I'd probably fall off, but then
again.... a new lease of life, perhaps.....:
Alas, the only things I could find in Bristol for those who enquired were a
few records of WATHEN and WILLIAMS folks:
Bristol Trades Directory
Beer retailers:

Bristol Commercial Directory:
Whathen, Gardiner & Co. Export clothiers and woolen warehousemen 38 Broad

Williams James grocer 31 Marlborough St.
Williams James shopkeeper 2 Cheese Lane

ST. MARY'S SHREWSBURY:
Interesting. There are three very fat volumes (about three and a half
inches thick) of the transcriptions by the Shropshire Parish Register
Society for St. Chads, but only one for St. Mary's.
Looking for a SHERRY connection. No luck, Lynda over there in blizzardly
cold Canada. Sorry.
Looking for a connection for PRICHARD and possibly any deVisschers. Nothing
found, Patti. Regrets.
But for Pat Hughes on <pat(a)pahughes.fsnet.co.uk> who lives in Hampshire, UK
and was wondering where the snow was for Christmas, and is researching
POPPITT, here's something:
p274 1 Feb 1712 Roberts /o Robert Poppett labr. on ye Old Heath baptized
(the minister should have been more careful, because some bleary-eyed folk
might interpret labr. as short for labrador!)
p283. 5 Jun 1715 Richard s/o Robert Poppit baptized

p709. 29 Apr 1794 John Everal and Mary Pugh married. wit. Robert Poppet
Whilst waiting for the St. Mary's volume to come down from the stack, I
poked my head into HOLT Denbighshire parish registers and found this:

On FRIDAY I am looking at two books: a) Australian Shropshire Register,
authored by the Australasian Shropshire Association, published 1904-8 (or
1904-12), which appears to be an annual bookform for those years. b) The
Post Office Directory of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire,
with the city of Bristol by Kelly & Co., Lond, 1879 edition.
Anyone wanting specific look-ups from these two publications please email
me as soon as possible, as these books are located in an off-site storage
facility and have to be specially ordered and then transported into the
library. This is a once off, so if you are too late with your email, as
they say - tough!
Bush fires in New South Wales now sort of under control. Sure is a large
patch of burnt earth.
Bye for now

Hi everyone
Today's gleanings;
Lynda Rimas, in what she terms is blizzardly cold Amaranth, Canada, on
<Rimas@sympatico,ca> asked me to keep an eye out for a Richard SHERRY born
c.1804 at ST. CHAD'S SHREWSBURY. He did a runner, Lynda - no sign of him at
all - didn't want anyone to be pouring water on his head at the font and
certainly did not want to be married or buried there either. Perhaps the
smog and smoke of the city was too much for him! Have to get the geny
detectives onto this one.
But, there were some interesting developments at St. Chad, nevertheless.
Patti Flyn Heimsness on <pattiflynn(a)lycos.com> was very good at giving her
Pritchard details at St. Chad's, and wanted to know if some of the female
children of Samuel & Mary Pritchard had survived to marry. I rather enjoyed
this one. Patti, here are all the details that will dovetail into what you
already have, and you may get a few surprises. By the way, there were
"millions" of Pritchards at St. Chad's. Rather exhausting just to look at
them! Rather like Smith down south! :))
p1282 6 Jan 1767 Richard s/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized.
p1295 10 Aug 1768 Samuel - as above
p1309. 22 Jun 1770 William - as above
p1327. 14 Jul 1772 Mary - as above - but now the register lists the parents
as Mr. Samuel and Mrs. Mary Pritchard. Obviously they had attained some
higher level of social significance in the community by that date! Patti
tells me that Samuel was a Burgess.
p1340. 30 Sept 1774 Ann d/o Samuel & Mary Pritchard baptized (I note you
have her listed as Hannah. Depends what records you read, I guess!)
p1355. 1 Jul 1776 Edward - as above
p1361. 7 Jan 1777 John - as above - (Samuel is now listed as "hatter." A
gentlemen's hatter, no doubt! Doesn't that put a spin on things?)
p1363. 23 Feb 1777 Maria d/o Samuel and Elean: (sic) Pritchard, baptized
THIS IS INTERESTING!
p1377. 18 May 1778 Elizabeth d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized. Born
24th April
p1389. Laetitia d/o Samuel & Eleanor, baptized, born 14th. Woops - forgot
to write down the date. Must have been, just at that time, the thunder
rolled and I looked up through the clear glass roof to see the grey clouds
rolling by. :)) Didn't rain, anyway. Shame. Anyway, she doesn't belong to
Samuel and Mary, so let's just forget her for the time being. Poor
Laetitia. Probably a cousin.
p1408. 18 Mar 1781 Martha d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard, baptized
p1413. 13 Jul 1781 Maria d/o Samuel and Eleanor Pritchard of Franl,
baptized. (I reckon that this is Frankwell, wherever that might be!)
p1420. 20 Jan 1782 Samuel s/o Samuel and Eleanor Pritchard baptized, born 4th
p1424. 19 Jun 1782 Frances d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized, born
18th (Nice to have the birth dates, is it not?)
p1446. 7 Jul 1784 Laetitia d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized, born 25 June
p1462. 18 Oct 1785 Sarah - as above, no date of birth given
p1488. 21 Oct 1787 Priscilla - as above, born 7th
p1551. 25 Oct 1793 Samuel s/o Mr. Samuel and Ann Pritchard (Corn Market)
baptized, born 25 Oct.
(Son of Samuel born 1768???)
p1745. 2 Aug 1811 Samuel Pritchard aged 59 buried (no wonder, after siring
all those chidlren! He must have been exhausted!)
p1784. 22 Dec 1765 Samuel Pritchard and Mary Harris married by licence
p1799. 5 Oct 1773 Samuel Pritchard and Eleanor Brownhill married
p1832. 22 Jun 1789 Samuel Pritchard and Elizabeth Hill married
p1884. 25 Feb 1805 Samuel Pritchard and Ann Nickless [signs Nicholass]
married. Wit. John Hughes and John Saxon jnr. (possibly connected with St.
Chad's)
No more entries concerning a Samuel Pritchard in the transcribed register.
Re. the children
p1538. 30 Aug 1792 Lett. Pritchard age 13 buried
p1507. 3 Sep 1789 Mary Pritchard buried (could be an elder person, of coursel)
p1907. 4 Dec 1810 Francis Pritchard parish of Buttington, Montgomeryshire,
and Elizabeth Hughes married. Wit. Thomas Humphrey and Martha
Pritchard. (Seems the younger Martha survived at least to this date. What
is the connection to Buttington, near Welshpool? Cousin, perhaps?).
The other girls obviously married later, or married out of the parish.
Transcripts end 1812.
Patti was also interested in Mary Harris's mother - a Mary deVisschers and
wondered what this latter name was. Well, seems to be Flemish or Dutch as
in De Visscher - DeViss(ch)er, and possibly, but not necessarily, Jewish.
Eventually comes down most likely to Visser, and then to the common English
version of Fisher. So, all you Fisher's out there (apart from those named
so because of their occupation) look to Belgium and Holland for your
possible earlier heritage! Have fun searching, anyway!
Mike McCarthy on <MMccar2080(a)aol.com> needed some help with an Edward Owen
b. 28 Oct 1756, at Albrighton. Not much, I'm afraid, Mike, but these two
entries at ALBRIGHTON.
p34. 8 Nov 1807 Thomas s/o Edward Owen and Charlotte baptized
p36. 28 Jul 1812 Sarah d/o Edward Owen and Charlotte baptized
Justine ORME on <ormefam(a)extra.co.nz> was buttering me up with promises of
strawberry jam, etc., but wanted some info re. Edward Vaughan who married
an Ann somebody, before 1670 and were resident at Crickheath around that
time. Ahh, well, Justine, I figured that very close by was the parish of
Kinnerley (a very much used parish for baptisms and marriages) where my
BATHER's hailed from, and if one was lucky......... very
lucky........ Anyway, you may be lucky by default. Although there was no
listing of your Edward and Ann, there were some very interesting entries of
Vaughans there, who are probably connected.
p1. 16 Jun 1677 Mary ye wife of Rich. Vaughan of Sandford buried
p18. 19 Oct 1685 Richard Hanmer and Elizabeth Vaughan married
p41. 21 Jul 1694 Sara Vaughan of Terecoyd buried
p50. 1 Nov 1697 Mr. thomas Clapham, vicar, and Mrs. Lydia Vaughan married
p151. 26 May 1745. ohn s/o John Vaughan baptized
p154. 6 Sep 1747 William - as above
p155. 5 Oct 1747 Reice Vaughan and Shusanna Tomley married
p160. 23 Mar 1751/2 Mary d/o John Vaughan baptized
p167. 7 Nov 1754 Sarah w/o John Vaughan of Lower Massbrook buried (Maesbrook)
p201. 30 Mar 1773 Susan w/o Rees Vaughan of Maesbrook Ucha buried
p201. 21 Apr 1773 Rees Vaughan of Maesbrook Ucha buried
p233. 7 Apr 1790 Thomas s/o Thomas Vaughan and Amy (formely Bate) of
Argoed, farmer, baptized. Born 13 Jan
(Don't you just love this minister, giving all this detail! Perhaps he
switched to being a Methodist later on, they were great at detail!)
p242. 8 Feb 1795 John s/o Thomas Morris and Catharine (formerly Vaughan)
lab., of Maesbrook Ucha, baptized. Born 6th Feb.
p264. 16 Oct 1808 Elizabeth d/o Richard Morris and Elizabeth (formerly
Vaughan) of Maesbrook, shoemaker, baptized. Born 17 Sep. (Just love this
minister!)
p268. 21 Apr 1811 Mary d/o Richard Morris and Elizabeth (formerly Vaughan)

p287. 1 Apr 1803 Thomas Vaughan, farmer of Argoed, buried
p304. 9 Apr 1786 William Vaughan of Kinnerley, widr, and Elizabeth Bell p.
of Middle, wid, married
And then, also close by at the KNOCKIN church
p7. Mr. Vaughan, curate of Llanyblodwell officiated at burials. (Wonder
wot's happening in Llanyblodwell, Justine?)
p20. 19 Jan 1743 John Davies of Kinnerley and Elizabeth Vaughan of Felton
married
p28. 24 Mar 1780 John s/o Richard and Elizabeth Vaughan baptized

N.B. I have found numerous errors in the indexes of these Shopshire Parish
Registers as transcribed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society which
was mainly in the very early 1900s, and at least, as far as I can gather up
to 1936, in that - in the index the person by that name is just not there
on the page. Blank, blank, so to speak. Again, when discovering persons by
random methods, they appear on the page of baptisms, etc. with their
parents, but they do NOT appear in the index. (So, we are all human, are we
not, and we all make mistakes.) One Priscilla Pritchard, though shown on
the transcribed pages ofthe register, does not appear anywhere in the
index. Thus, after her recorded baptism, if she died and it was not
recorded in the index, how on earth would you find her burial? So, what is
the lesson to be learnt from this? As always, go back to the original
registers, go back to the microfilms provided by the LDS folk where you
will see with your own individual eyes the early papers with the original
ink entries. It is all very well to rely upon transcriptions, and
transcriptions from transcriptions, but in the end the only real
satisfaction you can have, and the only way to prove things out, is to get
the original registers in your very own hands. Otherwise, you may be
barking up the wrong tree! Personally, I have never accepted anything
without having proved it out eventually with the original
registers. Remember this also, every time you look at the IGI. I respect
it. It is a great and marvellous tool, but it is not perfect. It was put
together by humans with the same faults and frailites that you and I have.
Let's face it - errors abound in genealogy. Probably more so than you would
care, or like, to think.
