FAMILY HISTORY MADE EASY!
Ever toiled through indexes of births, marriages and deaths, dreaming of a
better way
of finding your ancestors? 'Course you have, you're a family historian!
But dreams can come true - and there's a world-wide bunch of volunteers
working on that better way right now. The FreeBMD project group is
transcribing all the English and Welsh births, marriages and deaths indexes
from 1837 to 1899 to create a free, searchable database of those records and
make them available world-wide through the Internet.
Visitors to the FreeBMD site can already search over 3 million of the 100
million
births, marriages and deaths recorded between 1837 and 1899. Searches can
target all of England and Wales or focus on specific districts, events and
dates.
BUT - unless the project gets many more volunteers, it could be years before
the
database is complete. If you have a computer, with an Internet connection
and can
spare even half an hour a week, FreeBMD needs you! You don't need to be a
computer whizz or even a good typist - just accurate!
If you have your own fiche to work from, great; if not, you can work from
photocopies at home or join the webscan group. A number of fiches and films
have been scanned and are stored on a special website. Volunteers who join
the webscan group go to the website and download or print the page stored
there and transcribe them exactly like everyone else.
Details are typed into the SpeedBMD program (easily downloaded from the
FreeBMD site) which does most of the thinking for you. Working off line,
you can often just press a single key to enter names and districts - it
suits one finger typists perfectly!
When you've completed a page of records, you can either upload them to the
database yourself, or email them to a co-ordinator who will do it for you.
And, there
is a mailing list for extra support!
FreeBMD is also keen to hear from any one name studiers who have copies
births,
marriages or deaths from the indexes, to include those in the database. If
you have
such records to submit, check out the website to find out how, or contact
our
volunteer co-ordinators by emailing vol-coord(a)freebmd.rootsweb.com
FreeBMD can be found at : http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ where you can sign up
from a button on the page, or go directly to
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/Signup.html to join in. Failing that, contact
our volunteer co-ordinators by emailing
vol-coord(a)freebmd.rootsweb.com
If you don't have your own computer, but know someone who does, please,
please
encourage them to sign up. With 97 million records to go, FreeBMD needs your
help!

Hi All
I am a firm believer in credit where credit is due and for that reason I am
posting this to all the lists that I admin. I know that I have always
encouraged listers to be on topic, but I am prepared to say that as long as
there is a genealogical link and the information is of potential interest
then that is good enough for me.
Mary who has created the index detailed below has a wonderful amount of data
and back in the Autumn I mentioned that I had an ancestor who emigrated in
1903 to Canada. I gave Mary the briefest of details and was thrilled to be
presented with the data I recieved. So, well done and congratulations to
Mary; who certainly deserves to be acknowledged for all her hard work.

CALGARY & FOOTHILLS PIONEER RESEARCH
Alberta, Canada
Website: http://www.cadvision.com/traces/alta/alberta.html
Research Service: http://www.cadvision.com/traces/alta/pioneers.html
For quite some time I have operated a set of web pages entitled GENEALOGY
ALBERTA which have provided information, in the form of name lists, for
individuals with research interests in Calgary and the area to the south of
the city. I, and some friends, also operated the FOOTHILLS PIONEER INDEX
search service since 1990. The area covered by the Foothills Pioneer Index
did NOT include any coverage for the city of Calgary. It dealt with only the
area to the south.
I wish to inform everyone who may be interested that changes have recently
been made to both the web site and the search service. The first major
change has been to the name. GENEALOGY ALBERTA web pages and the
FOOTHILLS PIONEER INDEX have been renamed to:
CALGARY & FOOTHILLS PIONEER RESEARCH
The Web Pages: offer a small selection of on-line material and a new
Research Service. Currently, the on-line material consists mainly of
Honor Rolls and War Memorials from the area surrounding Calgary. This
project
is of special interest to me and forms the bulk of the data on these pages.
I do have a couple of other name listings. They are early Calgary Firemen
& Nursing Graduates. Although the volume and variety of data is somewhat
limited at the moment it is scheduled to expand in the near future. I
have also provided a map showing the area addressed by the research pages
and
a list of other useful Alberta research links. Coming up soon is a little
local history and a few useful research tips.
The Research Service: a great deal of work has been done in the past
month on this service. I have incorporated all the references from the
Foothills Pioneer Index and have commenced adding records for the City of
Calgary, as well as an area west and east of the city. Although this new
database is
in its initial stages it currently contains 41,699 references to source
material of interest to genealogists.
I have provided an on-line list of the sources indexed to date; a list of
those waiting to be processed and a list of source material in various
stages of preparation. Sources being indexed for this database project
include such things as cemetery recordings (MI's), 1891 Census, Land
Maps, Obituaries, Funerals, Memorial cards, Vital records, Church records,
Membership lists, Local History book indexes (family histories),
Canadian Border Entries for Alberta (immigration records via the US),
Periodicals
and much more.
I have placed on-line a list of the surnames which appear in my database.
If you find one that interests you I will be only too pleased to do a FREE
search of my database for a SPECIFIC name. You must provide BRIEF DETAILS
including the name, time period, area (if known) and, if possible, the
name of a spouse &/or children. I require this information before I can
search for any records in my database.
This initial search is FREE. However, charges apply for the provision of
further information from my holdings.
If you feel you I can be of assistance with your research please visit
my Website and have a look through the on-line material I have to offer and
search the surname listing on the Research Service pages.
I regret that I am unable to undertake any research outside of the area
covered by my database at this time.
Thanks, in advance, for stopping by. I hope you find something
interesting.
Above all else, Enjoy!
Regards,
Mary Trace

Hello. I do not know much about this line so I apologize for the really vague
and sketch info I have. What we do have is that our Downs line came from
Wales originally. Willis Joseph Downs sometimes went by Joseph Willis Downs
(and J, Willis, Joseph W. ) was born 1813 in Connecticut. He moved to NY and
married an Angeline Benedict. We believe his father may have been E. Downs
and his mothers name was Betsey. He probably had a sister namesd Sarah born
around 1819 in Connecticut but moved to NY and married into the Hulce family.
I know this is sketchy but can anyone help me? This is al I have!
Michele Lockwood
Hi everyone, I am new to your list and hope that someone may be able to
help me.
I am trying to find the parents and family of
SAMUEL EVANS born 1790 in Llandorff Cardiff.
I know that he married but I do not know who he married or who his
parents were.
I understand that he left Wales and went to live in Gloucester and I
have his history from then on, but do not know anything about him before
1790.
I would be most appreciative of any help.
Thank you and best wishes
June.
Hello and thanks for joining WALES-GEN.
Firstly, I shall introduce myself, I am Julie Goucher responsible for the
list administration for this list and my deputy is Carol of Tree Tops.
http://freespace.virgin.net/tree.tops/
For those of you who have not come across Tree Tops before I have appended
brief details and Carol's web page details & email address to the end of
this message.
The purpose of this list is for us to share and communicate regarding our
Welsh ancestors and for us all to benefit from the list. I am not a great
one for rules, except to say that I don't like flaming. Please treat
everyone as you want to be treated. This is YOUR list and I would like
WALES-GEN to be a friendly, helpful list, and a list that grows and
develops as we increase our subscribers.
I was recently contacted by a researcher in Australia, who asked if there
was a general list for Wales. It transpired that unless you knew exactly in
Wales where your ancestors hailed from you either had to join all the Welsh
county lists or take pot luck. I simply agreed, I ran the idea passed
Carol, who also has Welsh connections! and Wales-Gen was born. The Gen is
indicating both general and genealogy.
Please try and keep on topic, however, I am not so bad that I insist on
nothing else being discussed, my view is that if YOU find a particular topic
of interest then other subscribers may also. One definite No-No is Rugby!!,
unless it has an historical aspect to the discussion!
Please try and post messages to the correct address. Emails to
WALES-GEN-l-request(a)rootsweb.com will simply bounce to me. This is the
Unsubscribe or subscribe address, and you don't want to leave so soon!.
Postings should be made to the following address WALES-GEN-l(a)rootsweb.com
If you have any problems and you think I can help please email me at
list.owner(a)virgin.net and I assist if I can.
Lastly, Enjoy the list.
