Hello,
The 1860 Federal Census of Whatcom County, which also includes today's
Skagit and San Juan Counties, has been transcribed and is now online in the
WA GenWeb Archives. The file can be reached through either the WA GenWeb
Census Project <
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/wacensus.htm> or
through the County GenWeb Archives for San Juan or Whatcom (example:
Whatcom County GenWeb Archives
<
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/whatcom/whatcom.htm>). The file can
be accessed directly at
<
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wa/whatcom/census/60wc.txt>.
This is the first federal census taken in this area of the Territory, and
it does not appear to contain any population in the area which became
Skagit County. Darilee and Celia should take a look however, they may see
names they recognize as Skagit pioneers. At least the Whatcom and San Juan
County GenWebs should link to this file.
The 1860 census is coming soon for all other parts of the state. This is
the third county finished, following Sawamish (Mason) and Island. Please
contact me with any questions.
Thank you,
Kevin Fraley
