Bill,
The Special Projects in general and the Archives in particular require
stable leadership. Annual elections of the leaders of the projects to a
Triune, which then appoints a Director, I fear, will seriously undermine
the stability of the projects and ultimately lead to their demise.
The real question before the board, as I see it, is: "Is there a way to
simplify the access to the county level archive ftp sites for special
project volunteers?" If a special project coordinator were able to
assign volunteers to some counties in multiple states without having to
distribute multiple URL's and passwords, perhaps then all special
project data could reside in the archives under the appropriate county.
What I am proposing is that pointers with perhaps a single password be
set up for the special project directories in the counties, providing a
limited backdoor entry for special project volunteers. Would this be
possible?
If this can be done, then the uploads would place the data where they
most benefits the researcher, and the volunteer for the special project
would not be overburdened. The archive volunteers could simply point to
the HTML index pages provided by the special project volunteer, thus
eliminating any duplication of data or work.
Until some resolution of this question is found, it will continue to be
raised. Hopefully, this time around, we can resolve to find a workable
solution.
