Greetings to Washington GenWeb County GenWeb Coordinators,
I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. It seems to go by so
fast.
I am now accepting applications for the position of County GenWeb
Archive Coordinator in each of our 39 counties. The County Archive
Coordinator will be responsible for the collection, receipt, and online
display of all genealogical or historical data collected, received, or
displayed by the USGW project relating to their assigned county. The County
Archive Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that all laws and the
USGW, USGW Archives, and WGW Archives policies and procedures regarding
copyright, source credit, and online display are scrupulously followed in
all USGW online data relating to their county. The County Archive
Coordinator will work under the supervision of the WA GenWeb Archives
subsidiary projects when dealing with data in the special fields of those
projects. This includes the Washington Census, Cemetery, and Digital Map
Projects, as well as future subsidiary projects such as Biography,
Obituary, Vital Record, and others. The County Archive Coordinator will
work closely with submitters and donors, of course, and also with the
County GenWeb Coordinator (when a different person) and with local
societies and groups. At this time the County Archive Coordinator will have
no webpage creation or maintenance responsibilities.
In most cases, the ideal person for this job will be the County GenWeb
Coordinator, and therefore I am offering it to you first. Please let me
know as soon as possible whether or not you wish to fill this position in
your county (or counties). If you do not take this position, you are
naturally expected to cooperate with the person who does. In those counties
where the County GenWeb Coordinator is not interested or suitable, I will
open the position up to volunteers from the general genealogical community.
This plan will not go into effect until the County Archive Coordinators
have been trained, so until then all data submissions are to come to me as
before. I intend to conduct this training in January or February, and hope
to have the Coordinators on the job by March 1st. There may be a new
mailing list created to facilitate announcements and training.
In addition to these 39 new positions, we have a need for other
volunteers. We have an urgent need right now for File Format Managers. We
only have one at present, and would like to have 4 or 5. The File Format
Manager is responsible for assisting submitters and County Archive
Coordinators in creating or converting existing files into the format used
by the Archives, and for reformatting files submitted in other formats as a
last resort. I would also like to find volunteers willing to create and
operate subsidiary Archive projects such as Vital Record, Biography, and
Obituary. Please let me know if you can help in any of these areas.
Merry Christmas and thank you,
Kevin Fraley
State Manager, Washington GenWeb Archives
