For those of you that weren't around in the beginning of The USGenWeb
Project, I found the message I posted to Roots-L on June 26,1996 that
brought hundreds, now thousands of volunteers that have helped get free
data online for researchers. After I posted the message (below), many
offers came to help get it started. Dale Schneider, George Waller, John
Rigdon, Brian Leverich and I had the site organized in just a few short
weeks. The only negative comments that followed were from folks that
were either hoping to profit from genealogy on the Internet, or were
concerned that free data would hurt genealogical societies.
As of today, there are 796 megs of transcribed data in the Archives!! We
will soon have a GIGABYTE!! That is not counting actual census images
and other primary source images like marriage bonds, etc. Dr. Brian
Leverich has already committed free space for a terrabyte of data. :)
