Several of us CC's on the DISCUSS list are discussing search engines we are
using on our websites. I thought some of you would be interested ...
The first search engine I used was the Rootsweb one but almost a year ago they
stopped automatically updating the pages. But I was spoiled already and so were my county
users.
The one I use now is called PICO ...
http://www.picosearch.com/
It is a free search engine and I've been using it about 3 months and am delighted. It
was so easy to install that I was able to set it up in about 30 minutes... I did lots of
reading. Now an update takes less than 1 minute. I spend more time trying to remember my
pass word... <sigh> It keeps track of what words and areas are being searched.
Linda Haas Davenport reports that she uses
freefind.com .
http://www.freefind.com/
she said: "I have found Free Find to be excellent and it provides the option for
me to update the search whenever I put new stuff on
site. It gives excellent reports and gives users a site map and I can
"design" the search page as I wish with a few clicks of the mouse. I can
also go on line at any time and check all kind of things.
"They e-mail me a search report each week and let me know how many searches were
performed and what people were looking for. I have found it to be
excellent.

Another search engine mentioned on list was
Atomz.com http://www.atomz.com/ This is
also a FREE search engine that comes highly recommended (yes I would send a quote... if I
could find the email). It also mail reports of which sites are searched to the owner.
The person using it was also happy with it.
So here are three really good search engines recommended by CC's. Easy to use.
Easy to update. Unobtrusive. Slick. with no known complaints. And yah don't have to
be a rocket scientist to set 'em up.
This is my challenge to yah... place a search engine on your webpage...
Remember how much you like search engines, and books with indexes, and finding
stuff... Well, that's how much people searching your webpages like 'em too
