p.89 The Honorable Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence,
m. Rebecca Prescott of Lancaster & Salem, MA on May 12, 1763. Their dau,
Mehitable Sherman b. Jan 28, 1774 m. (1) 1793 Daniel Barnes and m. (2) Sept
1804, Jeremiah Evarts, Esq., son of James Evarts, Esq and Sarah Todd of
Sunderland, VT where he was b. Feb 3, 1781. His parents were natives of
Guilford,
CT and descendants of John Evarts who settled at Guilford in 1650. By this
2nd
marriage, Mehitable Sherman & Jeremiah Evarts had Martha Sherman Evarts b. at
New Haven, CT on July 31, 1809 and m. Sept 13, 1832 the Rev. E. C. Tracy,
editor
of the Boston Recorder. He graduated at Dartmouth College 1819; where he was
afterwards a tutor. He grad. Andover Theological Inst. in 1824 and was the
first
proprietor and editor of the Vermont Chronicle published at Windsor in 1834.
He
died at Windsor, VT May 5, 1862. (see p.177 for their children)
p.177. The Rev. E. C. Tracy and his wife, Martha Evarts had issue at Windsor,

1. Martha Day Tracy b. Oct 1, 1833 d. Nov. 2, 1852.
2. Jeremiah Evarts Tracy b. at Windsor, VT Jan 31, 1835; m. Sept. 30, 1863 his
cousin, Martha S. Green; read law with the Hon. Wm. M. Evarts of NYC and
was
in practice at that city.
3. Anna Tracy b. at Windsor, Oct 23, 1836.
4. William Carter Tracy b. at Windsor July 14, 1838; enlisted as a private in
Company
A, in the 1st VT regiment which left the State for the seat of war, May
8, 1861,
commanded by Col. (afterward General) Phelps and Peter C. Washburn,
Lieut. Col
When the regiment returned at the expiration of three months, he was
apptd re-
cruiting officer for the fourth regiment of VT Volunteers in which he was
apptd
2nd Lieut of Company K, Capt Gove, then Capt Pingree. In Dec 1862 he was
promoted to 1st Lieut in company H., Capt. Laud's regiment. He was
engaged in
the battles of Lee's Mills, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill,
Savage's Station,
the first & second battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and in fact all
the battles
which the army of the Potomac was engaged. The 4th VT regiment was com-
manded by Col. Stoughton.
5. Roger Sherman Tracy b. at Windsor Aug 10, 1840, d. Oct 21, 1841.
6. Roger Sherman Tracy 2nd b. at Windsor Dec 9, 1841 grad at Yale College
1862.
7. John Jay Tracy b. at Windsor Dec 23, 1843 grad at Dartmouth College.
8. Charles Walker Tracy b. at Windsor June 28, 1847, a merchant's clerk in
1864.
9. A son who died in infancy.
