Hi Everyone,
Not absolutely sure this is the correct place to post this, but......
Been researching early issues of The Herald of Randolph for
Stockbridge tid bits (now on our website under notes) and ran across
several articles and notices about a "Vermont Colony" in Dakota and
names and information about local people (Stockbridge, Bethel,
Barnard, South Royalton) who went west to join the colony. We are
very interested in this subject and will eventually put something on the
website, but since it involves many towns, I am hoping that some of you
may have bits from your own town that can add to this. The "Vermont
Colony" was started by Benjamin Bowman of South Royalton in
1883/1884 - the town was eventually named Loyalton (now in South
Dakota, then just in Dakota) Apparently a lot of other vermonters from
places like St Albans joined the colony in the late 1880s. If anyone has
anything to add, the subject may join many of our towns. You can write
to me directly as this may not be of interest to all. Thanks
Hope everyone is well - for you living out of Vermont, Stockbridge
got 12 inches of snow last week........... ;-)
