Hello to Everyone,
I am sorry that I have been under the weather for about a
week now, so I'll be playing catch-up on e-mail.
I have made some progress in the task of compiling an index
to the 1790 Census for Vermont. Bennington County is almost
complete, and the towns index may be see and linked on
appropriate pages, at
http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Evtgenweb/vtbennin/1790BenningtonCoIndex.html
. Please let me know if you notice any navigation or other
errors.
As you are probably already aware, the 1790 census does
include the names of any household members other than the
head-of-household, and it only identifies age ranges and
gender in the broadest terms (free white males above 16,
free white males under 16, and free white females...all
other free person and slaves). It is hoped, however, that
an index to all VT may help provide leads, to the possible
towns of origin, for those whose ancestors reported a
birthplace of Vermont in later census.
While abstracting the census, I was delighted to see that
Bennington County, Vermont took the column for "All Other
Free Persons" a laudable step beyond! Bennington County
instead included separate columns to enumerate black
residents by age and gender in the same manner as white
residents. Instead of the commonly seen column for "All
Other Free Persons," this county included 3 columns to
report: black males over 16, black males under 16 and black
females. The 1907-08 printed version of the census
(published by Bureau of Census) does NOT show this
distinction which was indeed made on the actual census
pages. It only reports the total number of "All Other Free
Persons." ;-(
Warm wishes,
