Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi, everybody:
RootsWeb has solved a technical problem, making the threaded archives for
mailing lists available again. This might be a good time to practice using
them, so you know what is there. By the way, you do not need to be a
subscriber to a list to view its archives. Keep this in mind as you
contemplate joining another list (or a bunch of lists, if you have the time
<grin>). You can browse the archives and see if it seems like a good group.
If there are very few messages, then by all means subscribe and liven up
the joint!
There are two types of archives:
----------
One presents messages in groups, by month, and then within the months by
connected message threads. The threaded archives are at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/
Rather than select by first letter, the easier way is to type the name of
the list in the box and click "Submit Query". Use only the name of the list
(upper or lower case) and do not include the -L or the -D. For example
smith (or Smith, or SMITH) -- *NOT* SMITH-L, and *NOT* SMITH-D
----------
The second type of archives is indexed by the words contained in the header
and the subject. These archives are at:
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
For these archives there is no selection by first letter, but "Submit
Query" works the same as the threaded archives, with one exception. In this
case any one of the following will work, for example:
smith Smith SMITH SMITH-L SMITH-D
----------
All these examples assume the existence of the "SMITH-L(a)rootsweb.com"
mailing list. It does, by the way; exist, that is. I am *not* the admin for
that list, in case you are wondering.

Greetings:
It has been busy, busy, busy here in list admin country.
If you are not one of the unfortunate customers of @HOME or one of its
affiliates, you may safely ignore the remainder of this message.
As the mayhem surrounding the potential bankruptcy of excite@home
continues, you may want to know how I am handling it as the list admin.
First, you will *NOT* be automatically unsubscribed just because your
address includes "@home". Many customers of @home still have service at
those addresses, or will again. I am going to allow nature to take its
course, and if your address has been murdered will give it a decent burial
when enough bounces accumulate that I am sure it is gone. (You will not
need to take any action to unsubscribe your old address. I have the
"pleasure" of having to deal with that.)
If you are assigned a new address, please subscribe it to the list
yourself, using the normal methods. This makes it much less likely we will
have technical problems down the road, which sometimes happens when the
list admin makes manual changes.
You have my sympathy. "There but for the grace of God" etc. If you have any
trouble you think I could help with, do NOT hesitate to contact me --
privately please.

Hi, everyone:
Please *DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE* or send any virus alerts to the list.
Virus writers are like terrorists, and I am doggedly determined not to
allow them to dominate my online life, or yours. Keep on doing genealogy.
That being said, there is a new virus out that has spread like wildfire. It
is called "Goner". The message arrives from someone who has your address
saved on their computer. The body of the message says:
"How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately
thought about you. I am in a harry, I promise you will
love it!"
Note the personal tone, and the misspelling of "hurry". There is an
attachment named GONE.SCR that *appears* to be a screen saver. It is NOT.
When you attempt to open it, it does Evil Things to your computer which I
won't detail.
Please make sure that your antivirus protection is loaded, running, and UP
TO DATE. I have been deliberately non-technical in my explanation, by the
way; more information may be obtained at your AV software vendor's website.
One example is at Symantec:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.a@mm.html
I apologize for the need to post this message. Again, NO DISCUSSION ON THE
LIST but if you need and want more information, you are welcome to contact
me privately.
