At the time of the American Revolution, Vermont was not easily accessible. A
few military roads and major waterways, such as the Connecticut River,
Winooski River, and Lake Champlain, provided the best routes through the
territory.
. In the early 18th century, small earthen roadways carried travelers by foot
or horseback.
. By the end of the 18th century, private individuals constructed several
turnpikes, which greatly improved land transportation in the State, and
enabled the establishment of stagecoach lines.

Major exports included potatoes, grains, and livestock, especially beef
cattle. Their importance within Vermont agriculture was established in the
early 19th century, when large herds of cattle were driven overland to
Boston, New York and other east coast markets - Agriculture in Vermont.

Massachusetts colonists, and became the first permanent European settlement
in Vermont. By the time of the American Revolution, many more English

Hi,
My name is Keith Hume and I am the Webmaster,(for lack of a
better description!) of the Chase web site.
Lonnie Chase passed your message on to me and your comments
are most appreciated as Lonnie spent so much time transcribing
and I spent some considerable time on the actual Web pages.
I do appreciate that an index for each section is needed but at least
the primitive search engine should help.
I am currently making a cdrom and it will include many images
from the CHASE Chronicles as well as much other information and
at $3 including postage in North America it will be sold at the bare
cost.
Once again thank you for the plug.
I live near Greenwich in England but come to the
States,(Greenfield,MA) for the HUME reunions.
I am Australian with a Canadian grandfather who was himself a
grandson of a Loyalist who fought in the New Jersey volunteers, for
the British.
I live in England where I came as a boy and have found
that, incredibly, I live only 10 miles from where my earliest ancestor
was born,
Once again thank you for your kindness,
Keith Hume
