Ok, now I need help. For ten years, I have searched for my great
grandmother:
Alzada Catherine -------?, born. 7 Jul 1859 in Charleston, or Brownington,
or Hyde Park, vermont.
I had a lot of nice people do a lot of researching for her, but we never
could find her roots.
What I did know was that she lived with William Webster Hawse, aka William,
aka Webster Hawes from Hatley, Stanstead Co., Québec. Alzada died in about
1915/19 and is buried in the All Saints Anglican Church Cemetery, Hereford,
QC.
Her children listed her place of birth as, (on there marriage cert.) as
Charleston, or Brownington, or Hyde Park, Vermont.
We know that she was Abenaki (the oral history from children is very
supportive) and that she grew up in Vermont. On the Canada Census, Hereford,
Compton Co., Québec, she told the census taker that she was from Vermont.
Her name (and place if birth) was spelled several ways, depending on the age
of the child giving the information: but always listed as Vermont.
Alzada, Alzader, Elzada, Elzader; but always the first name was followed by
"Catherine". We always thought that it was a middle name.
Just recently, I had a canadian researcher tell me that "Catherine" was a
Abenaki family name, most likely from the Brownington or Derby area.
My question is:
Were there Anenaki indians in either Charleston, or Brownington, or Hyde
Park, Vermont in 1859?
If so, did that participate in census, register there children with civil
authorities, etc.???
Does anyone know where I would begin researching the "Catherine" surname in
Vermont?
I have look at the Maine Abenaki website, but they do not provide much
information about this band in Vermont.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks so much.
Jeralyn & Teresa
