Hi, Freddie --
I'm sorry to hear this. I don't know what happened with Rhonda or what
the current situation is, and I hope it's just a misunderstanding.
Unfortunately, if it's that widespread, it's probably not, but --
I suggested years ago that, for redundancy, county submissions also be
uploaded to the Virginia USGenWeb Archives
(
http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm) and was told we couldn't do
this because of copyright concerns. Unfortunately, no matter how well
you think you know someone, you just never know how they will react when
things go bad.
This isn't the only kind of situation I was anticipating, though --
there are all kinds of reasons that it's a good idea to have multiple
"backups" of website data. Websites go down, servers die.
Since all of the material submitted to USGenWeb county sites is supposed
to be "free for non-commercial use," I would suggest that copyright
concerns would not be a barrier to this option.
The
archive.org Wayback Machine will probably have the sites' pages
stored, but last I checked they don't do images -- so those will
probably be lost.
Hope it all works out, but the situation looks pretty dim at this point.

I have learned that the recent resignation of one of our fellow county
coordinators, with multiple counties, occurred only after all helpful
material had been removed from those sites.
These counties are now virtually worthless, and while I thought that new
hosts would have a relatively easy task to take over the sites, I now find
that the exact opposite is true.
Sorry, ... I just had to vent to someone.
