Hi,
I have noticed the same thing on our old guestbook/forum that was used by
the old coordinators. I strongly urge coordinators not to use guestbook and
wish more would just link to the main genealogy forums such as
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/localities.northam.usa.states.vir
ginia.independent-20-cities.cityofpetersburg and
http://genforum.genealogy.com/va/ for any communication. They are both
linked from our main website at
http://vagenweb.petersburghistory.com/boards.asp. This prevents the SPAM and
also puts all forums/ message board communication about your County on the
same place which results in better community. Many of the forums and
guestbooks I see on the GenWeb sites are not setup for responses and also
expose the email addresses of the posters to major amounts of SPAM. Using
the
ancestry.com and
genealogy.com forums prevent the use of the email
addresses by SPAMMERS as they have images of the email addresses.
Thanks,
Randy

Subject: Re: [VAGEN-L] Guestbook Spam
Hi Michael,
I've never gotten any on my Stafford Co. Guest Book but I've gotten tons of
SPAM on several of my KY sites. Rootsweb's idea of help is to tell you to
change the name of your Guest Book!! I changed the name of one county's book
five times! Nothing helped! I finally took it offline for a month and then
put it back. Guess the Spammers got tired of having their crap bounce back
to them!

I've been getting alot of spam posted to my guestbook the last
few
months.
I use the rootsweb mailmerge system. I was wondering if anyone else has
been experiencing this problem and if anyone knows of a way to stop it.
Thanks,
Michael Dye
