Hello fellow CCs.
Many of you know of the USGenweb archives project; many of you link to
individual files within the archives. What not all of you probably know is
that like many other USGenweb subprojects, the Archives have moved to their
own domain and server. From now on you will never have to change links for
them again; being on their own domain, if we move servers again, the links
will still remain constant.
The main national archives page is now
http://usgwarchives.org
The way changes need to be done:
Any links previously starting
http://rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/
are now
http://usgwarchives.org/
example, the virginia state archives home page is
http://usgwarchives.org/va/vafiles.htm and it used to be
http://rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/vafiles.htm.
If you link to text files in the archives, they used to be here:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/
they are now here
http://files.usgwarchives.org
For example:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/alleghany/cemeteries/wolfe01.txt
was before
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/alleghany/cemeteries/wolfe01.txt
All the special projects (Obits, Marriages, etc) that were at locations like
http://rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/obits have also moved and are
http://usgwarchives.org/obits. Same beginning replacement.
Now for a different replacement:
The USGenweb Tombstone Project has also moved. Also, a couple months ago,
the links for Virginia were all reconfigured. PLEASE take a look if you link
to the Tombstone Project and make sure your links are updated. TP now has
its own domain,
usgwtombstones.org.
Old link:
http://rootsweb.com/~cemetery/virginia/index_accomack.htm
new link:
http://usgwtombstones.org/virginia/accomack.html
The state page for VA is
http://usgwtombstones.org/virginia/virginia.htmland will direct you to
the correct link for your county.
Now, Virginia has not begun file removal from rootsweb yet; Files will be
removed from rootsweb very soon, so this is the time to edit your pages for
the change. Most programs used to edit have a "find and replace" function
that may help you edit any pages with long links.
If you have ANY questions about the above comments, please let me know.
Sharon Hamilton is the state file manager for Virginia in the archives, but
she is recuperating from a severe injury, and as such is difficult to reach;
questions about the move and its affects can be directed to me, and if I am
not capable of answering I do have contact information for everyone who
does.
Also, PLEASE INFORM ALL OF YOUR MAILING LISTS. All regional lists, etc, for
your areas. The public needs to know about the move too!
Thank you for your
time in reading this lengthly message.
