Freddie -
Sorry to hear about the web site losses . I hope some of the data can be recovered using
suggestions that you've received.
My family's computers are notorious for misshaps at the least expected moment.
I've found that the best "defense" is to backup up all computer data so that
there is a second copy on an external device. That's not really as hard as it sounds.
Web site data - I happened to invest in a webpage editing program several years ago (not
that that's everyone 's cup of tea), so I edit and maintain my websites on my
laptop . I then load updates to the webspace using the freeware program Core FTP Lite,
which allows me to automatically limit those uploads, where necessary, to new and
changed files/folders . It's also easy to have CoreFTP download a copy of part or all
of a web site into a computer folder or to an external storage device . So even web -bas
ed files can be backed up "locally".
Data backup - Photos and video are a special hobby of mine (I was given my first camera in
the 4th grade over 50 years ago and I just filmed the NVCC Alexandria Band's concert
two weeks ago for their director when she couldn't find a NoVA student from the Visual
Arts department to do it). So backing up those types of files are critical to me. While I
normally back my files up to a 1.5TB (1,500GB) drive connected to our family network,
I can back data up in an emergency to something as simple as the MicroSD memory card
from my cellphone or to an inexpensive SD memory card that can bought at BestBuy for as
little as $8 ( for a 2GB HP card) and which can be read by the SD card reader standard in
most newer computers .
The SD memory card has the added advantage that it can be popped out of the computer and
stored--for example, in a drawer at home or at the office-- until needed for later backup
s . Or it can be left plugged in and available, with just a slight lip projecting from the
side of the computer. Thumbdrives are another good data storage option--but they are a
little prone to damage if they are accidentally hit while plugged in . If you want a
higher capacity device to back up family photos, Toshiba has marvelous 320GB and 500GB
USB-connected portable hard drives that are not much bigger than a Blackberry cellphone
and that cost as little as $70 .
And if your computer's operating software develops a problem and fails, but the hard
drive is still useable, you can buy a "hard drive enclosure" for about $40 that
allows you to connect the drive (in its new "external" enclosure) to a USB port
on your replacement computer. Then there's no worry about transferring the old
computer's data to the new computer , as the data's already on the USB-connected
hard drive. That's how my website files reached my current computer when the
motherboard started failing on my previous system.

Freddie,
This is *time sensitive* but if you go, right now, to google, if you go to
search the site where it was, such as "bath site:
vagenweb.org/bath/ " where
bath is the search term and
vagenweb.org/bath/ is the site to be searched,
MOST of the pages are cached. You might be able to do this for the others as
well. I don't know when they will spider again next, notice the pages are
gone, and remove the cached files though.

I regret to announce this, but the webpages and other files
in the webspace provided at
theusgenweb-sema.org
for Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Buchanan, and Carroll Co, as well as those
which make up the VAGenWeb homepage ... have been inadvertently deleted.
There is no CC for Alleghany Co, and Bedford & Carroll are mine, so
would the CC's for Bath and Buchanan take a look to see if they can
recover?
Thanks
Freddie S. <crying in his beer>
