Please forgive this non-genealogy post, but it affects us all and I thought
it important to share.
This information comes from the head of the Technology Department in our
corporation. He sent a two-page email to all in the company which (in brief)
states that numerous sources have promised to unleash 500-1000 new viruses
as part of their New Year's celebration. More than 30,000 threats have been
logged by the FBI and other agencies. Because these are new viruses they are
not yet all detectable by virus programs. Of particular concern are greeting
cards. They warn of receiving viruses via friends who are unaware they are
spreading them. The company is recommending that we back up everything, make
sure our virus protection programs are updated and running and they ask us
not to download anything or open any attachments (unless absolutely
necessary) for the first few weeks of 2000 until updates for these new
viruses can be created.
I generally ignore messages such as this (many are untrue), but given the
sources and documentation of this one, I thought I would share it. Again, I
apologize for the nature of this post, but felt it important to keep us all
informed. It seems we have fixed the Y2K bug, but seem to have a world full
of hackers who think it fun to celebrate by destroying our work!
