Subject: 1790 / 1800 County Tax Lists of Virginia
Freddie,
We write this in hopes for assistance in encouraging the Virginia USGenWeb County
Coordinators to add a link to our "1790 / 1800
County Tax Lists of Virginia" website from their respective county webpages. It has
been almost one year since we started our
website and we have enjoyed a successful following of people looking for free resource
information which is inline with the
USGenWeb/RootsWeb phylosophy. Our website deals with tax list records for the
"1790" and "1800" time period which can be used as an
alternative for the missing Federal Virginian Censuses. Please review our stats. We have:
24 out of about 90 counties represented, so far
104 different tax lists online
Over 2500 original tax list pages as JPEG images online
80 different tax list indexes totally over 40,000 names online
Master "1790" and "1800" indexes with all names linked to the
appropriate tax list page
Over 50,000 hits in less than one year
These records are free to anyone. They can be a very valuable asset for a time period that
has no other records available. Think of
all the researchers who continually go to the USGenWeb Virginian county websites, all in
hope of finding information about their
ancestors, looking for whatever records are available, online and free of charge. All we
ask is to have each county provide a link
to our record website.
We have asked each county coordinator to link to our website. We understand that it is
totally their decision to do so or not. In
our case we have found that most decide not to do so. In most cases these same counties
tend to have little to offer in the form of
free information. We have heard from so many people about the lack of information on the
county sites. They have asked us why our
website is not listed but we can't give any good reason except for lack of interest.
Many of these people have indicated the poor
quality of the links found on the Virginia county websites and have expressed their dismay
to us. Many have expressed the opinion
that the websites belonging to Carol Morrison to be among the worst. All we are asking is
for a little help in trying to rectify
this situation.
Our majority of advertisement is only through the county email lists. And this has
generated over 50,000 hits in less than one year.
Think of all the other people who do not belong to these email lists and how they are
missing out on this valuable resource. We had
hoped that people would embrace that concept of free resources. After all this is the
original concept of RootsWeb and USGenWeb.
We send this email as a last effort to solicit help with links. After so many, many tries
we are under the assumption that USGenWeb
is not nearly as interested in supplying free information as they are in being the sole
provider of free information. This concept
has been conveyed to us by several of the county coordinators who have provided a link, of
course with the condition of anomonity.
Is this horrible concept really true?
