I wanted to
send on an option that some of you may want to do for your county sites.
You can see this on the Prince William Co and DC Genweb pages that I've
done,
links
here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vapwilli/index.shtml
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vapwilli/links/families.shtml
http://www.theusgenweb.org/dcgenweb/index.shtml
http://www.theusgenweb.org/dcgenweb/other/surnames.shtml
Each
has a section on the page that uses Javascript to pull information from the
other website that I manage, "Our Family Tree" at
www.gurganus.org. It's
all
done in real time, on-the-fly.
I see the main goals of a state or county
site are to post resources that are not online elsewhere (general history,
births, marriages, deaths, etc.), and to organize links to resources on
other
sites. Hosting family trees doesn't really fit a state or county site,
especially since most family extend across many states and counties. So
this can be "outsourced" to OFT, and in return it can send back county
data.
The Javascript code and instructions are on my website
here:
http://www.gurganus.org/ourfamily/widget.cfm
Here's the full
list of sites that have this, if you want to see more
examples:
http://www.gurganus.org/ourfamily/help.cfm?mode=contents&help_id=82
So if it's of interest to you, give it a try and let me know how it comes
out.
