Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Rootsweb does not make policies for The USGenWeb Project.. never has.
Dr. Leverich does, however, have every right to protect Rootsweb, just
as "Mr/s. GeoCities" can make policies to protect that server. I've know
Brian (Dr. Leverich) for over two years, online and have met him in
person, and I know he would not make this type of decision unless there
was a very good reason.
Dennis, please don't forward messages from usgenweb-all to this list.
The VA cc's know that list exists, and if they want to take part in it,
they certainly can.
And from me:
I was on usgenweb-all for two years, off and on, but unsubbed a couple
months ago. The messages were getting ridiculous and counter-productive
to the spirit of The USGenWeb Project. The state coordinators for those
cc's that have been abusive to other volunteers should have taken them
aside and asked them to "cool it" and to take it private if necessary.
If any of those hateful remarks and untruths had come from a VAGenWeb
cc, I would have contacted them immediately. If they continued to act in
a manner that was not appropriate to represent our state, I would
strongly appeal to the VAGenWeb cc's to remove that person from the
VAGenWeb project.
Free speech? sure.. but take the insults elsewhere.
Thanks,
Linda
Please let me know if you haven't received the two ballots for this
region:
USGenWeb Ballot: National Coordinator
and the SE Region County Coordinator ballot (which I have not received)
Linda
This is ridiculous. Since when is RootsWeb the law enforcement
arm of USGenWeb? So much for free speech. *sigh* I guess
it's easier to silence critics than to address problems.

Perhaps the County hosts will see a book they think they'd like to
post to their "lookups" sections, and will contact Frances
`I have a lady that wants to donate some Virginia books for look ups.
`She wants to get started right away. She has quite a few books of
`which she has sent me a partial list. She is somewhat handicapped as
`she has Arthritis real bad but she is reliable and wants to be of
`help. She sent me a list of books this morning. She was so excited
`about being able to be of use that she stayed up all night. The best
`way to take enquiries is to search a SURNAME or County. Here is the
`list. Please do add to your library.

`Thanks for the info... hopefully it will help me find my McMahon/Snyder
`ancestors b PA? WVA? 1760s and 1790s and married Pittsburgh PA.
`They moved to Adams Co OH abt 1815/18 which I understand was part of VA
`at one point... interesting you mention Monongalia Co because I have
`some hints they may have been there in late 1790s... Mahon's Run and
`Decker's Landing. Thanks, again
Actually, all of Ohio was part of the territory claimed by VA prior to the
revolution.
Short lived Illinois County, was formed in 1778, from Augusta County,
comprising that part of VA, west and north of the Ohio River, but the State
assembly soon found it couldn't administer that territory and it ceased to
be recognized as a county in 1782, and the territory was ceded to the
Federal government in 1784. The territory was more commonly referred to
as "The Territory Northwest of the Ohio" or "The Old Northwest"

`Territory... Fort Pitt. I was hoping you could tell me when this would
`be... when was the Pittsburgh PA area part of VA and when did it
`transfer to PA. Was WVA also part of the VA Territory... what dates
`would that be? I'm looking for ancestors (of course) and they were
`supposedly born PA and married PA in late 1700s... not able to find
`them in PA. Maybe if I knew the dates when part of PA and WVA were in
`VA Territory it would help... Thanks, Penny
The question about WVa is easy ... Yes it was a part of VA until 1863
when during the late unpleasantness, it became a separate state.
The boundary dispute between VA and PA centered around three counties formed
from Augusta Co (West Augusta District) VA in 1776. They were Ohio,
Monongalia, and Yohogania Counties. The first two are still counties in WV,
although greatly diminished from their original size. The third, Yohogania,
is now extinct. All three included areas now in Penna (all of Yohogania lay
within present PA). The Augusta Court sometimes met in (now) Pittsburgh.
According to a map in the book _Virginia Court Records in Southwestern
Pennsylvania_, by Boyd Crumrine, 1974, Genealogical Publishing Co, reprinted
1981, Excerpted and Reprinted from "Annals of the Carnegie Museum"
1902-1905, Pittsburgh, Ohio County included the present day WV Panhandle
down including present day counties Wetzel, Tyler, Doddridge and probably
bits and pieces of surrounding counties, plus that part of Western PA,
roughly west of present day Washington PA. Monongalia Co included the rest
of northern WV (excluding the eastern panhandle) and the rest of western PA,
that was south of the National Road. Yohogania County included that part of
western PA, east of Washington PA, north of the National Road, west of the
ridge line that meets the WV, PA, MD corner, and south of the Conemaugh,
Kiskiminetas, Allegheny, and Ohio River lines.
The final settlement of the disputed claims awaited the running of the
boundary by surveyers from both states in 1785 ... 8^)

My name is Carolyn McIntyre
I recently purchased a home in the Newmarket Village section of Newport
News. I would like to know more of how this area came into be being. I
would appreciate your help or advise as to where and how I can find,
this information. I am told this area was started as post world war
track housing??? Iam amazed at the quaint, modest structure of each
home. Again I would appreciate any help or guidance from you.
Thank You,

I received this from one of my subscribers, how sweet!
Dear Yvonne,
I need to unsubscribe but didn't want to do it in a cold way without
explaining. Through this wonderful hobby of ours and more specifically through
"Old Frederick," I "met up" with an old love last June; we are getting married
in April and needless to say, I've got my hands full getting ready. He's still
on the list and will pull off anything he thinks I'd be interested in.
Thanks,
Prince William Co. started one a year or so ago, but it never took off. Paula's
looks great.

Vive la USGenWeb Project!

I agree, this is an excellent idea! What about including those that didn't
actually move, but were entered into a new county by new boundaries? I find
many researchers who assume, for example, that their ancestors are always in
Tazewell, even though Buchanan was formed from Tazewell and many would later
be found in Buchanan.

The only protocol we need to worry about initially is VAGenWeb's
protocol. If we have a volunteer, and it seems we do <g>, other cc's can
either join in or wait to see how successful it is and join in after
their visitors bug them enough. ;)
As with all county features and services, a project like this can spread
to other state/county webpages.
I'd like to hear from some others here..... any suggestions or thoughts
about how to go about this? We really need to be cautious when accepting
a migratory entry from a visitor. One wrong entry could send a
researcher on an endless journey to find their ancestor. Do we request
documentation? Do we merely post a "warning...... none of this is
documented".. or eventually DO document it with online scanned images of
primary source documents?
Linda
Thanks to Paula Wiegand, of Giles County, we might have another idea for
our county pages. Take a look at her Migration Project:

I would love to get this going for all counties. Paula, will you give

automation going?

I cannot thank you enough. I have been unable to locate my ggg-grandfather
