Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I too agree with Sue and Betty. Let's enjoy our family history hobby.

I don't really think incorporating is the way to go at all (nationally
or on a state level).
I know the recent fiasco has given everyone something to think about and
I wouldn't be against registering the USGenWeb or the VAGenWeb name as a
Trade Mark which would then be used by license on our pages. We would
be protected from having the name usurped without the rigid structure of
incorporation.
Guess that independant spirit is still real strong when it comes to

For what purpose? What would it gain? Are you talking about IRS non
profit status? If so, what are they doing that generates an income?
Federal non-profit status filing costs about $1200.

Hi All,
While incorporation as a non-profit organization doesn't bother me, I
also don't see it as a benefit either. At some point, it might be
beneficial for The USGenWeb Project to do so----there are some legal
reasons why it might be a good thing to do. Now, I am not a lawyer, but
if reach a point where we are seeking grants, etc. for projects,
incorporation as a non-profit might make sense. Then, again, it might
not be necessary at all. BUT, I see absolutely no reason for a state to
inc. in any fashion as xxGenWeb. The state pages are offshoots of The
USGenWeb Project---not individual entities unto themselves. If
incorporation as a non-profit does for some reason turn out to be a
benficial thing for the project, incorporating at the National level is
all that is needed and would afford the same benefits to the state
pages.

And I agree with Sue, Betty and Kelly. And to take this just a bit
further... it seems to me these kinds of thoughts are getting away
from our (collective) 'purpose.' I've always had the impression that
we were doing what we're doing for purposes as Sue stated - an
interest and hobby. At least I know I have been. And personally, if
USGenWeb or VAGenWeb decides to incorporate, I'm outta here. :-)
I can very easily remove all references to the XXGenWeb Project
from my two counties and still enjoy my hobby.

What would be the benefits of gaining non-profit status? For me
individually, I see no real benefit. Maintaining my county site is an
interest, a hobby, and already not for profit. If there are reasons to
incorporate perhaps you could share them here.

Thanks for your quick responses. I was just feeling you out. <g>
Two states are talking about inc.'ing as a non-profit, but the advisory
board has "advised" them that they would have to rename the project from
XXGenWeb, and not incorporate that name.

non-profit, how would y'all feel about VAGenWeb following?
I don't think we should if USGenWeb doesn't.
Linda
The USGW advisory board has come up with an announcement, summarizing
the latest events.
http://www.usgenweb.org/official/announce.html
If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss them here.
One thing the board did not foresee was that some folks would think
Rootsweb (Brian and Karen) were the ones to incorporate USGenWeb, Inc.
They had nothing to do with it.
If you have not changed your links from usgenweb.com to usgenweb.org or
usgenweb.net, please do so as soon as possible. The .com URL is
controlled by USGenWeb, Inc. at this time.
Btw.. we have finally finished moving. My new info is:
761 W. La Deney Drive
Ontario, CA 91762
909-986-2226
Thanks,
Linda
Linda,
I think the awards are a great idea. I loved the idea of having the
users vote in a poll, say one vote per day per computer...... I don't
have the foggiest how to set that up though. We have enough talent in
VAGenWeb to do this in some way. Once a month would be nice. These CCs
work hard and need to be recognized now and them for the job they do!!

I think this is a great idea. Does anyone have any suggestions for
VAGenWeb? We could start out on a state level until national gets
something in place.
TXGenWeb has had this in place since Jan. 1997:

We even have our *own* graphic artist, or two, on this list. :)
