Dan, I know that there are lots of older people in the USGenWeb, but
you seem to be missing the point:
“State or County from having a page as a companion to their websites”
Facebook is being used as a companion to one’s websites, for those who wish to do so. No
one is talking about changing their websites to Facebook or looking for sites through
googling. The point of having pages on FB is one of communications with researchers. We
get more questions about where to find records on FB than we ever see on any of the Boards
and Lists anymore, which used to be the heart of communicating with researchers. Very
little is being posted to the Boards and Lists anymore, and the only other option of
communicating is by having researchers contact members through their website contact info,
but that is just a one on one and often are people wanting someone to do their research
for them. We need to be able to have an open line to our visitors, and with many people
doing their research online nowadays, Facebook has been a natural draw for the past couple
of years, it’s a place where they can post their questions and where many others join in
and hel!
p one another, or even make discoveries about their own families.
Pointing people to resources on our own websites or making them understand more about what
kinds of records can be found for our State is what it is all about, and whether or not
anyone wants to participate, it’s up to them, but for the USGenWeb to not want to move
forward with whatever the current modes of communications are available, is not the way to
keep in touch with our visitors and we’ll continue to be lost in the past.

No. Not missing the point, but you made several.
I really do agree with you. I already watched one gen group bite the
dust.
Seems when there is a variety of skills in knowledge and writing, people
just don't hit off with making it work.
Over the 20years on line, one thing I always agree to is this.
* you cant use too much exposure or advertising*
from a subject line to you web page to the gen web main page.
Where do the people come from? Advertising - same way I got my first
google email address when google first started it. Not a lot of
difference in the media.
Except, your point here, shows a submission of ( if all else fails,
lets use something else) Ok, look at find a grave, billion graves and such.
They created some thing that draws the people because just like
ancestry, and oh yea, AOL, give temp free access, they became large
fast, why does google give out free mail, and other services, what is it
they are doing - think about it. What about those sales people, talk for
2 hours and then, make you the offer of a life time, then, for a dollar
more, double the anty.
What is genweb ? Sounds like a spider spinning a web, and maybe it
is just like that - you place on websites most any thing related to the
criteria you can find. Well, maybe after 2 weeks hard work, no one in
America related to that info, so fat yet. Gen web is not defunk, and
using another social media might include so much more, but why? Why are
they there and not the gen web??
I can tell you some of why because I went to 5 cities. Randomly ask
* do you do genealogy? to people, some are clueless, I ask 0ver 50
people here in this area of about 1200 people, have you ever used the
usgenweb? HUH? Whats that? But I ask about face book, almost every one,
every where knew about it even if they don't use it.
Every one has heard of google, how about Yahoo, and Alta Vista and
so many other search engines * that still use meta)/
Any way, yup, I have to agree with all you said.
But a question? Is face book going to put the genweb back to being the
best online genealogy system on the web and the most popular if we use
face book to shadow what we should be doing to recover gen web?
As a website?
People need a reason to use it.
Or do we want to use people for more info on the website?
Again, we are deep into years on the internet, its not new any more.
Not many people can write and upload a web page and get it right any more.
I know 4 people out here that cant even understand how to use a web editor.
There ya go again, got me talking.
sheesh.
Dont pay any attention, I just rattle ;)
ps, we are not lost in the past, we are lost in the present.
another PS - every one is great here, why? Because we care enough to
discuss a point.
