I have one Facebook group geared to assist people who are researching their
Florida Pioneer Ancestors, it has over 850 members, I also have 2 co
admins there. Prospective members (people who ask to join) must answer a
prepared private message from the admins which serves to assess their
qualification for membership. Not all will respond and after 2 weeks of no
response their request to join is deleted, and not all who respond are
allowed into the group. This is a very active group and we have over 1,000
photos and files that have been uploaded to the group. To my knowledge
there are no restrictions regarding the amount of space a group or person
has available to them. This is a closed group, all groups are closed,
buone, I have a private with 2 memme and my sister, we save recipe's and
craft patterns to it for future use!

I have had a closed yahoo group for my surname, since those groups
were
onelist 19 years ago, never had one single problem, spam, or virus ever.
Only open to invites. No one can read posts on closed groups.
Only reason I prefer yahoo is because they have 100 gig photo space
geared for the group, a files section and data base.
I don't know face book, or what they have geared to their groups.
But I been with yahoo over all these years, and with my remaining years,
its just going to stay yahoo. Too old to worry about moving all us old
folks there, plus, some of them have face book.
I cant see the difference between being face book or yahoo really.
People will find and join where ever they think they will find free info.
And having a family group, don't mean they talk and share like open family.
120 members was my last count, pretty quiet there.
Roots web and Gen places are all quiet.
I do not have co admins, I tried that once. Caused snooty problems.
My group is self governed and well mannered.
I have 76 groups btw. 19 years. So I been in this a little while.
What I seen of face book and my space, and all the social stuff and
stuff that followed just trying to view a page on there, I like my
website, its free, open, no joining, no adds, no social percussions. I
have a free genealogy tree location, well, 2 locations people can build
their tree's and what ever they find to put there. web tree's, you can
do your own, make it private or public, have as many members as you
choose, and its free.
I have a cheap sub to ancestry, archive, newspapers, genealogy bank
and some others I forgot for now.

very vulnerable to the spammers and trolls.

continue to run the groups, and having someone else helping out, can really
be useful as well.
