In 2007, when
Ancestry..com began placing banners on websites,I chose
remove most of my County sites to webspace I pay for a s the USGW does not
provide hosting to its members. The costs for three domain names and
hosting comes to about 300.00 per year. That is 300.00 that I am basically
donating to USGW each year A donation I do not even get any acknowledgement
for, much less a thank you!
It would be nice to be able to offset expenses via donations, but we are
prohibited from doing so by USGW! In all actuality USGW is receiving
thousands of dollars each year and they do not even thank these donors
for their donations! We pay the fees and are not allowed to even
acknowledge that fact on our websites! Not o mention the time we put in in
maintaining those sites. Or the many people who donate material to the
websites.
The availability of free hosting options are pretty limited now , when
compared to ten years ago. Basically you have a choice of Rootsweb or
Google sites. Both of which while adequate , limits on what you c an do
with your site.
So far I only addressed donations at a local county site level, but what of
the State Sites that are being hosted on paid for names and hosting? Do
they receive any acknowledgement b y the USGW for the donations they are
contributing to the Project?
Nothing is truly FREE no matter where your site is hosted, someone paid
for it!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I think it is time we address the subject of monetary donations to
USGenWeb and the various state projects. I am beginning to think
perhaps it should be permissible for USGenWeb, States and Counties to
accept donations to pay for web hosting and domains, etc. Times have
changed. Wikipedia asks for help, as does Mozilla and many
others. They are all free -- just like USGenWeb.
I think we all agree that the use of USGenWeb should always be free,
but our sites can be helpful. People may wish to support us financially.
What are the pros and cons?
Rel@ively,
Patrice
