Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
First, an apology. Although I've created a NORTHWEST list on groups.io this
was always with a view to it being a temporary bolthole before Rootsweb's
closure on 2nd March 2020. I know many of you have already subscribed to
https://groups.io/g/NORTHWEST-UK but if you're agreeable I intend to invite
all current NORTHWEST listers to a new list at
The Webmaster at Cumbria FHS has generously offered us a home on their
servers, which I think will give us a more stable & permanent (if there's
such a thing) platform for our list.
The groups.io list will remain as long as any of the listers require & can
be used at any time. I don't intend to close it anytime soon. I've been
made aware that groups.io partner to Amazon & Google and may use our info.
But for a permanent home with features that are familiar to all current
listers I am recommending that we subscribe to the Cumbria FHS list. It
works exactly the same as the current Rootsweb system & has archives the
same as the Rootsweb system.
Unfortunately, Rootsweb has seen fit to hold on to all current Rootsweb
archives so I can't bring them over. To search the archives of any current
Rootsweb lists will require you to still go to Rootsweb only.
You need do nothing until I send you an invitation to the new list. Because
of the privacy provisions of the General Data Protection Regulations we can
only invite rather than just swing over to something new.
I welcome any comments.
In the event of the closure of our list I've created a NORTHWEST-UK
GENEALOGY(note the minor name change) list on the groups.io platform &
several listers have already signed up.
To make it easiest to transfer over I intend to send an invitation to every
existing UK-NORTHWEST subscriber from the list to join
The message will carry my name in the invitation......that's only because
I'm List Admin. Those wishing to subscribe to the new list will need to
click on the " accept the invitation" link in the message. Those of you who
have already signed on will need to do nothing more & can just ignore the
I searched in vain for a public announcement or news report about the
closure of the Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists. It is being done almost
secretively. Members of lists without active moderators who pass on the
information will find themselves cut off without knowing why.
I've therefore written a blog post, giving as much information as I have at
the moment, to try to let people know what is happening.
Please help to let people know what is happening by posting links to that
post (and any news items you may find) on social media sites, genealogy
There is a very preliminary proposal from the Cumbria FHS to host any
mailing lists pertaining to Cumbria on its servers if these lists cease on
I emphasise that this is a VERY tentative proposal at this stage & no
details have been offered or negotiated. But I personally think this would
be a much better alternative to such forums as Facebook etc where many
listers might be reluctant to sign on.
Moreover, moving to Cumbria FHS servers would mean our list will function
much as it does now, albeit that we'll still only have access to the
archives on Rootsweb's servers.
I'll keep the list informed as matters progress.

As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a
great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message
boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account.

Welcome to the UK-NORTHWEST mailing list!!
PLEASE SAVE THIS INFORMATION so you have it for future reference.
PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE of your fellow list members. Some folks are beginners at computers and some to genealogy. The world is a better place when we are all patient with each other. Personal attacks, criticism, or flaming are never permitted.
HOW DO YOU POST? Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
WHAT SHOULD YOU POST?
1. Questions about your ancestors. Give as much detail as you can.
2. Interesting history that is relevant to the list.
3. Genealogy and family history conferences, even if they charge for admission.
4. Genealogy societies should feel free to post about their society and their websites.
5. Book reviews of genealogy books are reasonable to post. A list of books is not, but sharing a good genealogy book you've found is a good idea.
6. Links to personal blogs that are about genealogy. They can be your blog or another. Even if the blog has ads, that is not a problem.
7. New collections on various genealogy sites that are relevant. We don't want advertisements, but if you find an interesting collection on Ancestry, FamilySearch, Library of Congress, or some other site that has relevance to the list, let people know.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR POST?
1. An informative but concise subject line.
2. When replying to a previous message, be sure to check that the intended recipient's address is showing in the Send To box of your email BEFORE clicking on SEND.
3. Proofread and be sure you want your post public. All posts go in the archives!
WANT TO UNSUBSCRIBE?
Send an email to email@example.com and put unsubscribe in the subject and body and nothing else.
