WOW! This is amazing!! Yes, two children is correct. My mother Sylvia was born
9/4/1935. Her brother (Uncle Al as we called him as kids) is a judge down in Rio Grande
City. Don't think he's ignoring you if he doesn't reply. My mom laughs that
she has to be penciled in his appt book just to talk to him. He's a very busy man.
My grandmother's name is Lorenza Leija (pronounced Lay-ha). We visited Rio Grande
City a lot as kids. What I remember the most were the scorching hot afternoons with
nothing to do. So my brothers & I used to go to Uncle Alex's house and play with
our cousins. Being that Uncle Al was a lawyer, he made more money. Thus, our cousins had
cooler toys & games! haha! Grandma Lorenza was a chef and cooked for the soldiers.
That's how she met grandpa when he was stationed down in S. Texas during the war. I
can remember my parents driving us thru the old fort when we were kids. It hasn't
been an active military installation for a long time.
When I talked to my mom she did say that yes, her dad's brother's name is Clarence
and was mistaking it for Lawrence. She remembers Clarence's wife, Gladys. She was a
very nice aunt to my mom.
Mom said she didn't grow up w/ her father. As awful as it may sound, he was kicked
out when she was 5 yrs old. That is when he trekked his way to Kansas and was a farmer.
My mom has only few pictures of him but within the past 10 yrs she had them restored and
would love to send you copies. She's very excited I found you. As mentioned
previously, my mom was pregnant with me when her father passed. She remembers me kicking
her tummy at the funeral in 1971. Too, it seems like she & I are the only ones so
enthralled that I found you! She has been trying to get my brother, the computer whiz, to
find something on the internet but has had no success because he doesn't put it on his
list of priorities. Men! I tell ya...
I just had to tell you what got me to google my grandpa's name. I came across the
name Silvana and it made me think of Silvanus. So I googled and low & behold! Look
what I found! By some by chance blessing, there you were.
Well, just so you know, our last name is Lozano. My mom was the baby out of 5 children.
I am the baby of 6. The years really stretch in between. Folks freak out when I say that
my grandpa was born in 1892. I can remember Grandma Lorenza telling me she was born in
Aug 1903. That year in my science class I learned the Wright brothers 1st flew in 1903,
so that's why I remember the year. She passed in mid-April of '91 or '92
(can't remember the yr she passed).
I just really want to tell you how much it means to finally meet & see pictures of
family I never thought I'd know or find. We would love to share our family portraits
with you too. Let me get with my mother this weekend and get back w/ you next week. She
knows lots more than I do!
